Job Description

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Provides basic library services on the City's bookmobile at various assigned locations throughout Las Cruces and Dona Ana County. Tasks include: Drives a 33-foot self-contained bookmobile to assigned locations. Maintains a current collection of books and periodicals on bookmobile shelves. Develops and implements library programming (Storytime, Booktalks, etc.). Continuously updates personal knowledge of best sellers, high demand library materials, and reference sources. Checks books out according to library procedure. Provides basic readers, advisory, reference, and interlibrary loan services to library patrons. Collects library fines, keeps financial records, and deposits funds at the main library circulation department. Maintains accurate records of library transactions and submits monthly statistical reports. Ensures required maintenance of the bookmobiles. Tasks include, but are not limited to: Maintains accurate records of mileage and maintenance for submission to the Senior Librarian. Performs housekeeping duties and minor maintenance activities on the bookmobile to ensure a safe, clean environment. Coordinates service and repairs with City Fleet Maintenance Department. Additional Functions/Tasks: Participates in special projects/events when necessary. Takes books and papers to the recycling and/or trash facility as directed. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Basic math, cashiering, and computer skills. Working knowledge of standard library checkout and materials processing procedures. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other library employees and library patrons. High school reading and writing abilities. Ability to interact respectfully with the public. ENVIRONMENT FACTOR: Works 90% inside the bookmobile, 5% outside with bookmobile setup and take-down, and 5% inside traditional library setting. Occasional exposure to inclement weather and the dangers inherent in handling and using a large vehicle. PHYSICAL FACTORS: Ability to get in and out of and to drive a tractor with a 5th wheel and trailer in tow or self-contained bookmobile; to frequently bend, crouch, kneel, to lift up to 40 pounds of books from the floor to waist level, and push/pull up to 40 pounds 4 feet approximately 4 times each day to set up the stairs on the bookmobile once at the assigned site. WORK SITUATION FACTORS: Position involves varied work hours according to the bookmobile schedule, responding to customer inquiries and complaints, and interfacing with a multi-cultural community. May work alone or with others within the confines of a bookmobile. DOT REGULATIONS REQUIRE DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING, PHYSICAL EVALUATIONS, AND RELEASE OF INFORMATION FORM (49 CFR PART 40). Valid Class B commercial driver's license must be obtained within six months of hire date
