Job Description

DEPARTMENT: Adult & Teen Services located in Central library POSITION DESCRIPTION: Performs duties related to a professional librarian ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Serves as advisor for the Teen Advisory Board (TAB); responsible for the collection and development of district –wide teen materials; assists customers with reference, readers’ advisory, Ask Colorado (a statewide online reference service) and instruction regarding library print and non-print materials; assists with the selection of library materials as part of the collection development team; coordinates outreach to customers; develops and presents programming and displays; and other duties as assigned. Reports directly to the Head of Adult and Teen Services ESSENTIAL KEY COMPETENCIES: Demonstrates sound professional judgment and demeanor both within and outside the library Contributes and collaborates in order to promote a congenial working environment within a team setting Exhibits a welcoming customer service attitude, representing the library with tact and courtesy Establishes and maintains effective and courteous interactions with customers, supervisor, co-workers and volunteers Adjusts to multiple demands and rapid change, demonstrating flexibility and openness Plans, organizes and performs job assignments accurately with initiative and judgment independently or with minimal supervision Exhibits superior work habits including dependability, responsibility and accuracy REQUIRED EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS: MLS or MLIS degree from an ALA accredited graduate program* or May 2007 or recent graduates encouraged to apply Previous library experience Proficiency in Internet research, navigating OPAC, office software and electronic mail Ability to make public presentations DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Three years’ experience working in a library setting; knowledge of library databases and library automation systems; and, ability to communicate orally in Spanish PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to: Communicate verbally Maneuver about the library in a timely fashion Read a minimum print size equal to 10 point Times New Roman font Tolerate dust, mold, etc. that may have accumulated on books

Mesa County Public Library, located in Grand Junction, just 28 miles east of the Utah border at the junction of the Colorado and Gunnison Rivers, has a Librarian I (Adult and Teen Services) opening for an energetic, customer-focused individual. Mesa County Public Library seeks a creative thinker to join our Adult and Teen Services team on the Western Slope of Colorado. Responsibilities include teen collection and program development, Teen Advisory Board advisor, assisting customers at the Adult and Teen information desk, and using library resources, such as online databases and the Internet for reference and reader's advisory. The library serves the entire county of over 124,000 residents with a central library and seven branches. Our annual circulation is over 700,000 and approximately 1,600 people use our services daily. In this friendly and collaborative environment of 70 plus employees, the district library board and management encourage continuing education and provide for staff development and participation in professional organizations. The ideal candidate possesses a professional approach to working with library customers and staff members, a willingness to work in a team environment, and an ability to adjust to multiple demands and rapid change while demonstrating adaptability and openness.
