The Adult Services Librarian position is responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing library services, programs and outreach, within the library and for the community. This position leads and supports the district’s mission and core values. Work is performed with considerable independent judgment and initiative.
The Highlands Ranch Library is hiring 2 full-time, 40 hour/week Adult Services
Examples of Duties:
•Demonstrates thorough knowledge of professional library principles, public reference service expertise, homework help, outreach and presentation skills, and an understanding of public library operations. Demonstrates a good working knowledge of the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association.
•Builds relationships through exceptional patron service and ongoing outreach to individuals and organizations in our community. Acknowledges patrons, helps them at their point of need, partners with them to meet their goal and follows up.
•Takes ownership of the customer experience by embracing new technologies, modifying the collection to meet patron needs, looking for new ways to reach customers outside the library, and creating a sense of discovery and exploration in the branch.
• Effectively assists patrons of all ages by providing professional library reference and readers’ advisory services. Assists patrons in using reference tools, conducting in-depth research, locating materials and managing accounts. Instructs patrons in the use of resources across formats and platforms.
•Anticipates trends that will impact libraries, literacy, publishing, and information technology. Embraces innovation and experimentation. Recommends thoughtful change to help the district stay relevant and vital.
•Serves as a community speaker on the topic of literature and literacy. Advocates the role of the library in increasing the desire to read for recreational and educational purposes.
•Demonstrates interest in current events and community concerns, and a command of numerous subject areas to assist patrons and staff with their inquiries.
•Manages a customer-focused public library collection. In cooperation with the Collection Development Department selects, evaluates and deselects materials based on the needs and expectations of the community, current trends, and patterns of use.
•Works with Branch Program Liaison to create, promote and implement adult programs. Reports statistics of programs as required.
•Mentors colleagues and team members across departments and branches. Identifies training needs and opportunities and responds appropriately.
•Uses discretion in addressing problem situations or conflicts at the appropriate level. Actively builds healthy communication and understanding at the branch and across the district.
•Performs storytime as required.
•Maintains and compiles reference statistics for district reports.
•Serves as a Person in Charge (PIC) within the branch.
•Creates positive experiences for library patrons by effectively and efficiently performing job tasks; presents a positive image of the library in attitude, communications and appearance while performing duties in both the public and staff areas.
•Demonstrates a professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, co-workers, and volunteers.
•Stays current on DCL policies, processes, procedures and technologies required to perform work duties.
•Promotes DCL’s culture of safety by following library safety policy guidelines and safety rules. Practices effective personal and branch safety.
•Performs other work duties as assigned.

•Education: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Library Science or related field. A Masters of Library Science degree is preferred.
•Experience: Two years previous professional library experience preferably in a public library.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
2 years of professional experience preferred
2 years of library experience preferred

•Working knowledge of the professional principles of adult services to include reference tools and methodologies, including print and electronic sources is required.
•Demonstrate a positive attitude toward staff and patrons of all ages in all contact environments.
•Must be able to maintain a positive professional image in representing adult services and the district.
•Requires the ability to work under periods of occasional stress resulting from peak periods of patron service requests.
•Must have the ability to learn and become proficient in skills, functions and technologies required to perform job duties, working effectively independently or cooperatively as part of a team, maintaining effective working relationships to complete assigned tasks and accomplish job responsibilities.
•Must communicate effectively using English. Must read, write and understand English at a level appropriate to the position.
Computer Skills: Must demonstrate competency in computer use including internet, email, Microsoft Office Products (or equivalent). Must demonstrate competency and ability to learn about emerging technology as patron trends demand. Keyboard skills required at an equivalent of typing 35 words per minute with minimal errors. Must be able to learn and become proficient with equipment and software programs as required to effectively and efficiently perform assigned duties.
Physical Abilities: Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to: Stand, walk, bend to floor level, reach to a height over 70 inches, read a minimum 8 point font, and work at computer workstations, frequently. Handle materials, push/pull loads with a force of up to 35 pounds, carry 15 pounds, lift up to 35 pounds, grip up to 15 pounds, kneel, squat and climb, on a regular basis. On a limited basis, tolerate residual smoke, dust, mold or foreign substances on materials.
