Job Description

The Auraria Library, serving the University of Colorado Denver, Downtown Denver Campus; Metropolitan State College of Denver; and the Community College of Denver seeks a dynamic, energetic and innovative individual to serve as the Head of Special Collections and Digital Initiatives. This tenure-track position supports special and digital collections by collaborating with internal and external stakeholders of the Library to create, promote, plan, implement, and evaluate these resources. Reporting to the Associate Director of Technology and Digital Initiatives, this position is primarily responsible for: •Providing leadership and a knowledge base for the development of special collections (in all formats) and the digital library at the Auraria Library including identifying collections, developing work flows, and working on technical issues involved in digitization and digital asset management. •Ingesting new digital content into the Library’s digital repository. •Creating the discovery mechanisms for special and digital collections including helping to expand online presence. •Collaborating with other institutions involved in our digital repository partnership. •Providing knowledge of current and emerging best practices, tools, principles and standards for digital preservation and collection management. •Operating as project manager for digital initiatives and as such communicate effectively in person and in writing. •Working closely with digital content stakeholders in the library and with staff and faculty across the campus •Developing policies and procedures for acquisition, access, discovery, marketing, security and organization of digital, special, and archival collections. •Planning, coordinating and directing activities, projects and work flows in the department. •Collaborating with others to further Scholarly Communications on campus. •Providing consultation services to constituents about their information and research needs in special and digital collections. •Supervising the Special Collections Librarian and potentially students. This position works with supervisee to develop a professional plan and monitors and evaluates work accomplished. Examples of Work Performed •Perform analysis of special collections and make recommendations in regards to staffing, workflows, mission and goals •Serve on internal and external committees related to special and digital collections. •Act as functional expert for DigiTool and Archivist Toolkit •Catalog, ingest and organize digital collections •Help develop an online presence for Special Collections currently leveraging a Drupal content management system •Function as an expert in library intellectual property issues •Assist users with research involving Special Collections •Manage policies, best practices and workflow in regards to digital and print collections •Function as an expert in digital materials evaluation in terms of quality, format, best options for preservation, etc. •Perform digitization of selected materials, sometimes in very fragile condition •Train and supervise others in digitization. Position Classification and Salary This is a tenured/tenure-track faculty position with a minimum salary of $55,000 commensurate with skills, experience, and rank. To be appointed with tenure, one must be tenured at a comparable academic institution and meet the Auraria Library's criteria for tenure and promotion. Minimum Requirements •Master’s degree in library or information studies, or equivalent advanced degree and experience •Minimum of 2 years of experience with digital resources and special collections. •One year of management experience
