Job Description

Background Information: This is an exciting opportunity for someone interested in the “behind the scenes” activity of the library. The successful candidate will be organized and enthusiastic about providing access to customers through the library catalog. The Cataloging Assistant participates in the creation and maintenance of bibliographic records for an online catalog of library materials in a variety of languages and formats. Duties and Responsibilities: Searches for cataloging records in the OCLC bibliographic database, imports them into the online catalog, and revises them as needed in the catalog and OCLC. Reviews cataloging records and shelf-ready materials received through book and media vendors. Batches load vendor-supplied records, acquires updated files from multiple sources on a regular basis, edits files to Library standards, and loads files into the catalog. Updates the online catalog to add, transfer, and withdraw items and make corrections. Works closely with other Technical Services and library staff to facilitate technical services work flow. Expedites cataloging and resolves problems for library staff. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the principles and procedures of professional library work including methods, practices, and techniques of library original and copy cataloging and classification. Knowledge of computerized cataloging, bibliographic and circulation system databases. Knowledge of professional library theories, issues, and trends. Knowledge of Windows, Word, Excel, and Internet. Skill in multi-tasking and prioritizing. Skill in organizing information, using time wisely and performing duties in a professional manner. Ability to use computer keyboarding skills to enter information quickly and accurately. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers. Ability to provide excellent customer service. Experience: Minimum two years of experience working in libraries. Experience with Dewey Decimal classification, machine-readable cataloging (MARC) records or RDA preferred. Special Requirements: A background check must be passed after the offer to hire has been made. Education: Bachelor’s degree in related field.
