Job Description

The Technical Services Librarian leads, administers and coordinates the operations of the Technical Services Department including acquisitions, serials, cataloging, government publications, and collection development. This promotion-track, faculty position develops the Library’s materials budget, works closely with both the Electronic Services and Access Services Departments, and supervises staff and librarian positions. As a member of the library’s leadership team, the Technical Services Librarian participates in general administrative decision making, library management, strategic planning, and priority setting. This position provides leadership and innovation for the department while managing human, financial, and other resources to ensure efficient operations; shares responsibility with the Dean of Library and the Department Heads in providing vision and leadership in moving the library forward to best serve the research and scholarship needs of our diverse student base; and manages a collections budget of over $1.3 million and monitors and reports on book acquisition expenditures for the 20 plus subject areas for budget control of $100,000 – $200,000 of print and electronic book acquisitions. The Technical Services Librarian monitors and reports on database expenditures of over $900,000; meets with vendors; manages renewals and licenses; initiates trials; gathers use statistics; participates in consortium-wide purchases; serves on the library’s database committee and chairs the collection development committee; supervises acquisitions, periodical check-in, binding, and cataloging operations and the operations of a Federal Depository Library Program. The Technical Services Librarian develops professionally as a faculty member through activities such as research projects, publications, and service to the profession and to the University.

Additional Info & Requirements

Candidates must possess a Master’s in Library and Information Science, 3-5 years experience in a technical services department in a public or academic library preferred and have a familiarity with government publications and Federal Depository standards. The Technical Services Librarian must have a strong familiarity with a computerized catalog and the subsystems (cataloging, acquisitions, serials, reports) within that catalog eg. Innovative Interfaces Inc., strong knowledge of OCLC Connexion software, strong knowledge of MarcEdit; familiarity with RDA, strong familiarity with national library standards and practices (e.g. AACR 2), working knowledge of LCSH and the Library of Congress classification system, and familiarity with vendors and the publishing field.
