•Plans, implements, and evaluates library services according to perceived needs of the Community. This includes performing analysis of reading habits and library usage patterns, along with collecting patron input to plan and implement Library services.
•Develops, implements, and evaluates long and short term goals and objectives.
•Develops and administers policies concerning library operations, budgets and programs. With input from Library Advisory Board, the library director creates and implements library policies, and with input from City Finance Department and City Manager, the director ensures that operations and programs are planned within budget parameters.
•Handles complaints in accordance with policy.
•Conducts the accounting for the library including the collection of fines, fees, and other revenues.
•Through coordination with the City Manager, recruits and recommends the employment of library personnel, promotions, transfers, or termination of staff.
•Provides supervision and delegates responsibilities to the library staff. The director prepares the monthly staff schedules, conducts monthly staff meetings, assigns duties and provides coverage for shifts as necessary. Organizes, trains, assigns, and evaluates personnel and volunteers.
•Arranges staff training and ensures that all required city training courses are completed.
•Prepares the annual budget and presents and defends budget request as it moves through appropriate channels before being presented for approval to City Council.
•Prepares monthly and annual financial and statistical reports to the Library Board, City officials and the State Library. These reports include (but are not limited to) bi-monthly financial reports for City Finance Dept.; monthly circulation statistics for Library Advisory Board; and an annual comprehensive report for Colorado State Library.
•Supervises maintenance of library building, equipment, and furnishings. Orders equipment, supplies and furnishings as needed. This includes overseeing the cleaning agency; coordinating with the City of Trinidad Parks & Boulevards Dept. for maintenance and repair and contacting the IT Dept. for computer related issues.
•The Director recruits volunteers, including community service volunteers, Judicial District probation department clients and assigns them to selected library tasks.
•On a consistent basis, and with assistance from the state library, evaluates the library collection for both balance and comprehensiveness, and selects adult and children materials.
•Oversees the ordering, Mylaring and cataloging of new books. Manages the inter-library loan program and the McNaughton lease program. Conducts routine weeding of the collection and ensures that books are repaired or replaced in a timely fashion.
•Implements a variety of children’s programs including One Book 4 Colorado, the annual Summer Reading Program and other children’s programs.
•Supervises the library’s computer system and services and handles equipment problems. The Director is the administrator for the library’s automation system and requests assistance from the city’s IT department only as needed. Conducts routine inventory checks on library equipment.
•The director oversees the running of Public Computer Center, including supervising PCC staff and maintaining/submitting the data required by the BTOP grant.
•Provides reference and reader’s advisory services to patrons on a routine basis and assists staff with conducting reader reference interviews.
•Prepares questionnaires and surveys to evaluate public responses to the library. The Director implements surveys for the Colorado State Library in regard to usage of Computer Center; and administers an end of summer exit poll for Summer Library Program participants.
•Oversees the library History Room and works closely with the historical society to ensure the preservation and appropriate collection of history room materials.
•Accepts and acknowledges gifts of money and library materials. Establishes protocol for receipt of donations and gifts. (These will eventually be channeled through the Friends of the Library).
•Schedules, and represents the library, at variety of community events.
•Speaks, on behalf of the library, before local groups including presentations to the Kiwanis, Rotary, Pierian, Community Foundation, etc.; and speaks to students about library careers.
•Cooperates with community groups and city officials to implement library services, including working closely with the City Manager, City Council, Chamber of Commerce, Trinidad Area Cooperative, HeadStart, Council of Government (COG), Trinidad State Junior College, Las Animas County Commissioners, Local Network Group, Trinidad Community Foundation, etc
•Works closely with, and attend meetings for, the Friends of the Library, and the Foundation. Prepares agenda and presents reports at the monthly Board of Trustee meetings.
•Attends night and weekend meetings as necessary, including city council meetings
•Keeps informed of current library developments by attending workshops, professional meetings, and reading current literature. (This may require traveling for periods of time outside of Colorado.) Director will attend SEADS (South East Area Directors) meetings, CLiC (Colorado Library Consortium) workshops, CAL (Colorado Association of Libraries) conferences, and participate in webinars. The director will also arrange staff training, read reviews of new books both in review manuals and online. The Director may occasionally visit other libraries to observe programs and service and compare specific services and programs.
•Maintains membership in professional organizations, including ALA (American Library Association), CAL (Colorado Association of Libraries), CLiC (Colorado Library Consortium), and NEXUS (a consortium of libraries who share the same automation system and union catalog).
•Performs all other library services necessary to provide smooth library service, meets the ever changing needs of the patrons and continues to promote/involve the library throughout the community in a positive way.
•Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands for long periods of time. Must frequently lift and/or move heavy materials, including furniture, computer equipment, piles of books and heavy boxes. Frequently assists with cleaning, including maintenance of the outside of the building.
•Often required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
•Must be able to maintain flexible hours to accommodate travel (often over night) to off-site meetings, without overtime compensation. Must be able to drive and possess a registered/insured car and a valid driver’s license.
•Required to operate and maintain typical business office equipment and computers, including loading paper, installing ink cartridges, upgrading software, sending faxes, scanning documents, using microfiche etc.
•The Director must be able to see, hear, talk comfortably on the phone, supervise staff, speak in front of large groups and handle conflicts between patrons and staff.

Trinidad, CO is nestled between Denver and Santa Fe NM on I-25. Although Fishers Peak is the most predominant land feature, the Spanish Peaks and southern Rockies also provide a beautiful backdrop for the town. Visitors enjoy wandering along the brick roads that wind through the through the downtown area, perusing the numerous art galleries, strolling down the river walk, and dining at cafés. There are many community events throughout the year including parades, Santa Fe Trail Days, professional theater performances, musical festivals and rodeos. Trinidad is often called the Caribbean of the Rockies because of its mild winters and non-humid pleasant summers. Although the City of Trinidad has a population of around 10,000 people, the Carnegie Public Library provides services for all of Las Animas County.
A combination of education and direct work experience may be considered.

Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Skills Required:
•Excellent communication, writing and organizational skills.
Director will address public groups regularly, lead meetings with staff and advisory board, and interact with patrons on daily basis. The director will write news releases and other articles about library events and issues, actively locate and write grants, and maintain library records (both written and electronic).
•High level of computer skills.
Skills required include (but are not limited to) popular library software (ex AutoGraphics), internet, digital communications, Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), web design, and social media (ex. FaceBook).
•Ability to administer the activities of a public library and supervise the work of others.
The director will be required to supervise and evaluate a staff of ten or more people, including city-hired employees, Seniors, Inc. employees, and volunteers placed by other agencies.
•Familiarity with library standards.
The director must have the ability to prepare short and long term development plans and objectives, and have experience creating and implementing policies and programs.
•Maintain knowledge of standard library principles and practices.
This includes understanding the concepts of freedom of speech, copyrights, collection development, patron confidentiality, censorship, and other library ethical issues.
•Possess knowledge of Colorado Library Law
The Director must keep current on changes in Colorado Library Law and develop positive rapport with the State Library staff for support, advice, and updates on new issues.
•Thorough ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
The Director must maintain positive relationships with superiors, subordinates, associates, officials of other agencies, and the general public. The director must be able to establish an excellent working relationship with City Manager, City Department heads, County Commissioners, State Library staff, Advisory Board, other nonprofit agencies, and be able to solicit feedback from library patrons.
•Proficient in acquiring and maintaining a library collection.
The Director should have experience with developing and maintaining a collection that that meets the ever changing needs of the patrons and the requirements of State Library Board. Oversees the inter-library loan program and the OverDrive Program.
•Proficient in accounting, balancing budgets and managing grants.
Actively pursues and applies for grant money. Manages existing grants.
