Job Description

Requisition #2014-00111 Substitute Library Assistant. This substitute position is scheduled a variety of shifts including days, evenings and weekends.
Performs a variety of routine and specialized clerical and public service work in support of a library department (could include the following areas: Reference, Young Adult, or Children’s). The incumbent works in partnership with other employees, departments/divisions, external entities, and the public in delivering effective and innovative services. Provide holistic services to internal and external customers by seeking ways to integrate programs or services provided by other departments, divisions, and external entities.

Provide customer assistance in person or on the phone. Greet and welcome the public and answer questions. Respond to and resolve routine customer needs that may include location of materials; information regarding library services or programs; interpretation of library policy; instruction in the use of the library automated catalog, Internet computers and accompanying software and other equipment such as copy machines, and microform readers. Answer basic reference questions using print and electronic resources; recommend book and other library material; and take inter-library loan requests. Refer patrons to other staff as appropriate. Maintain confidentiality of all patron data and information.

Maintain necessary operating records and transactions. Perform routine data entry and retrieval; file materials; and complete other clerical tasks as assigned. Maintain the library areas to include straightening, picking up materials, organizing, re-shelving, or shelf reading. Present library programs for the public including assistance in registration, publicity, preparation and distribution of program materials, room set-up and clean up, and audience supervision. Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Uses all required safety equipment. Perform related duties as required.

Training - Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience
- One year experience at a library public service desk. Some library experience working with children and youth preferred.
ORAny equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the Necessary Applicant Traits.

Necessary Special Requirements – New hires must, as a condition of employment pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: oral board, reference checks, background checks including local police check and sex-offender registry, drug screen and fingerprint checks through CBI/FBI.
