Job Description

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Biomedical Sciences Research Support Specialist collaborates with and lends support to research departments, laboratories, and individual scientists within the CU AMC, and is pivotal to defining and expanding the Library’s role in supporting the research mission of the university. With a demonstrated understanding of the work of laboratory scientists, the scientific process they apply, and the impact and potential of e-Science methodologies upon their research, the Research Support Specialist develops and provides training and professional library services in the use of biomedical knowledge management, information and data resources, tools, and e-Science strategies. The Research Support Specialist may help researchers manage their data, navigate the university’s available data management, curation, and preservation landscape, and adhere to federal or other grant funding agencies’ data management and public access policies and requirements.This position will work both as a team member and independently.

 Responsibilities include:

  • Partner with faculty, actively contributing to research proposals and projects, curriculum development, clinical translational science, and outreach to the surrounding community.
  • Educate researchers about NIH, NSF and other funding and local (The Digital Collections of Colorado) compliance requirements especially regarding publications and data
  • Monitor trends in biomedical data curation, clinical translational sciences, and biomedical research.
  • Participate in research and assist researchers who are developing tools/techniques in biomedical informatics.
  • Coordinate and conduct training regarding the effective application of biomedical information tools (e.g. NCBI databases, PubMed, Ensembl, MGI and other relevant resources.
  • Play a lead role in the development and implementation of consultation services for scientific data access, management, and preservation.
  • Provide researchers with training and guidance on the appropriate use of electronic collaboration and workflow management tools to support team-based research activities
  • Assist in developing policies, setting priorities, and recommending improvements to the overall provision of core and emerging education and reference services.
  • Perform consultations with individuals or small groups on topics related to information resources and information management.
  • Participate in and assist with the development, implementation, coordination, promotion, and assessment of the library liaison program.
  • Cultivate partnerships and collaborate with library and university personnel on projects including grants, papers, poster presentations, or other creative undertaking.
  • Represent the library on university, state, and regional committees and consortia;
  • Participate in professional development activities.

 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Biomedical Sciences Research Support Specialist is expected to assume personal responsibility for designing and implementing a plan for continuing professional development and to actively contribute to their profession through scholarly and service activities.

The Biomedical Sciences Research Support Specialist reports to the Head of Education and Reference.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Biomedical Sciences Research Support Specialist has no supervisory responsibilities, but may oversee the work of students, volunteers or other staff on committee work, specific projects, or as requested.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, pharmacology or equivalent field OR a Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA accredited library school
  • At least 3 years of experience working directly with biomedical researchers.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the work of laboratory scientists, of the scientific processes they apply, and of the impact and potential of e-Science methodologies upon their research.
  • Experience conceptualizing and conceiving new solutions to researchers’ information and data problems;

 Preferred Qualifications: 

  • PhD or equivalent degree in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, pharmacology or equivalent field
  • Demonstrated skill using a wide range of bibliographic databases in the health and life sciences, including the full suite of NCBI databases and resources as well as other core bioinformatics tools.
  • Knowledge of data mining and analysis tools, such as R, DAVID, etc.
  • Experience applying metadata and working with ontologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and grow a customer base through the creation, enhancement and provision of user-centered services.
  • Experience with the activities, duties and responsibilities in a library liaison program
  • Experience with clinical translational science and health informatics concepts and resources
  • Experience working in a health sciences, academic, research, life sciences, related-field special library, or previous experience in a health or bioscience profession
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of or experience teaching and developing real-time and/or asynchronous instructional sessions for adult learners.
  • Knowledge of biomedical information resources and databases
  • Experience searching for grant and other funding opportunities.
  • Experience with educational technology tools, including course management software such as Canvas;
  • Working knowledge of blogs, wikis, online gaming environments, podcasting, RSS and other Web-related technologies
  • Demonstrated evidence of initiative, dependability, ability to work cooperatively in an evolving technological environment

The University of Colorado Denver Health Sciences Library [http://hslibrary.ucdenver.edu] seeks resourceful, energetic and innovative candidates to fill a new position as Biomedical Sciences Research Support Specialist, a non-tenure-track faculty position that primarily collaborates with and lends support to researchers on the Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC).  The successful candidate will assist in the planning, coordination, and promotion of the education and reference programs of the library to research departments, laboratories, and individual scientist within the CU AMC.
