Job Description

Purpose/Summary of Job: 

This position usually serves as the first point of contact for patrons and requires excellent customer service skills.  Specific job duties include, but are not limited to:  actively assisting patrons in finding information using print, electronic, and online resources; assisting patrons with technology and computers; performing all circulation duties including keeping statistics, processing holds and overdues, and maintaining patron records; operating and maintaining interlibrary loan service; assisting with collection maintenance and cataloging duties; providing patron instruction; and participating in planning and development of library operations and services as part of the curricular life of the college.  The incumbent must be able to work a flexible schedule including a minimum of two evenings a week and potentially weekends.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. (50%) Patron Assistance:  Assists patrons with day-to-day inquiries, reference questions, and finding library materials using print, electronic, and online resources as well as assisting in the use of technology and computers.
  2. (10%) Interlibrary Loan:  Operates and maintains interlibrary loan service for students, faculty, and staff.
  3. (10%) Circulation Duties:  Proficiently handles all circulation duties including opening and closing procedures, use of all circulation forms, keeping statistics, maintaining patron records, processing overdues, check-in/check-out of materials, maintaining holds/course reserves, shelving library materials, and maintaining displays.
  4. (10%) Collection Maintenance:  Performs duties associated with receiving, labeling, and preparing library materials for cataloging and processing in the library's integrated library system.
  5. (10%) Information Literacy:  Provides instruction to patrons in the use of resources across formats and platforms.
  6. (5%) Cataloging:  Performs entry-level cataloging work for the print and non-print collection according to national standards.
  7. (5%) Other Duties:  Perfoms other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Associate degree minimum.  Two years of current library experience in circulation, reference, or adult services.  Must possess excellent customer service skills and the ability to work well with diverse populations.  Proficient in library system software, Windows, MC Office Suite, internet browsers, library databases, and search engines.  Detail your experience in your cover letter or application.  Effective oral and written communication skills.  Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to work independently.  Must be able to lift 50 lbs. occasionally.  Must be able to work flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.  Occasional long and irregular hours necessitated by special projects and compliance with deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher. 
  • Experience with interlibrary loan service. 
  • Experience using Auto-Graphics integrated Library System (ILS). 
  • Experience in providing reference assistance and patron instruction. 
  • Experience with cataloging according to national standards. 
  • Library experience in an academic library setting.

Part Time (0.50 FTE), 12 month Administrative position.  Position works 20 hours per week.  Schedule includes a minimum of two evenings and potentially weekends.

Responsibility and Decision Making:

This position performs the day-to-day operations of the library.  The day-to-day operations include answering patron requests for information and assistance, assisting patrons with technology, performing circulation desk and collection maintenance duties, providing interlibrary loan, reference, entry-level cataloging, instructing patrons in the use of resources across formats and platforms, and other library-related services.  This position does not supervise any staff.  The position is responsbile for managing the library's interlibrary loan and overdue/holds system.  The libary (as part of the Learning Resource Center) serves the entire college community, including all of MCC's centers, as well as the general public.
