Job Description

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The City of Aurora is seeking a highly motivated professional to fill the position of Reference Librarian. This person will serve as the primary volunteer coordinator for the library department and will perform professional library customer reference work, program coordination and community outreach using all available library resources.

The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first come-first serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recruits, screens, places, trains and supervises volunteers.
  • Provides advanced reference and research services to the public
  • Performs circulation desk duties
  • Provides specialized staff instruction in reference
  • Assists groups and individuals in locating and obtaining library materials
  • Develops and implements special reference services and associated programs
  • Provides programming and maintains calendar of programs and events
  • Maintains daily statistics and provides monthly reports
  • May supervise other library workers and volunteers
  • May manage cash flow
  • Plans and organizes formal and informal library instruction for community
  • May perform additional duties as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Demands: Sedentary physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 10 pounds; may require frequent lifting, carrying, walking, and standing; may require pushing and pulling of boxes; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens; vision for reading and recording information; hand/eye coordination for operation of a computer system.

Work Environment: Works in a clean, comfortable environment.

Equipment Used: Frequently uses standard office equipment including a computer system, copy/fax machines, and printers.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program.

Experience: At least 6 months of professional library experience working directly with customers. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge: Knowledge of the principles, organization, and practices of library service; library classification system; a computer system and related software.

Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees, volunteers and library users; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; work independently with indirect supervision; work shifts, nights, and weekends.

Skills: Strong interpersonal skills.

Licenses, Certificates and/or Equipment Required: This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
