Job Description

The Material Handling Technician (MHT) Supervisor position manages all material handling duties including processing library materials, manually or using automated handling equipment; shelving and retrieving library materials, straightening and reading shelves. The position supervises all staff management procedures: hires, trains, coaches, develops and evaluates the Material Handling Technician (MHT) and Lead MHT employees and monitors the workload of staff. The position partners frequently with Patron Services Department Heads and Operations Supervisor for general circulation services department operations. Work is performed with considerable independent judgment and initiative.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Manages, plans and oversees the work flow of all material handling functions. Monitors workload of staff and facilitates completion of tasks.
  • Ensures that employees respect the presence of patrons while working in the stacks, pushing carts, and shifting materials. Ensures that all employees consistently practice the "patron comes first" philosophy.
  • Oversees staff efforts to accurately shelve and maintain all library materials.
  • Enforces effective personal and branch safety procedures including using correct lifting, pushing, and stretching techniques; preventing the blocking of aisles, doorways, and emergency exits; reporting unsafe practices; working to ensure a neat, safe, and attractive circulation area for staff and patrons.
  • Supervises sorter operations, including changing of sorts, overseeing the sorter profile, and monitoring the check-in process. Ensures that all library material "exceptions" that are not handled by the sorter are resolved.
  • Monitors and analyzes sorter functions to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Participates in library-wide planning and decision making as a member of the library management team to improve the quality of library services. Coordinates with the Training Department and other district Material Handling Supervisors to ensure consistency of procedures District-wide.
  • Plans and facilitates MHT staff meetings. Attends meetings and participates in committees and task forces as assigned.
  • Establishes goals for overall efficiency of material handling in the Circulation Department for the material handling team.
  • In conjunction with the Branch Manager, prepares staffing budget requests, written reports and plans for the circulation services department.
  • Performs Person in Charge (PIC) duties, in concert with other supervisory and professional staff in the branch.
  • Pro-actively handles change management initiatives.
  • Partners with Department Heads to oversee the use of the library automated system for transactions in the checking in and checking out of library materials, processing patron records, and determining materials status.
  • Manages the library materials holds and expired holds process.
  • Oversees all required courier duties.
  • Oversees the handling of damaged items and replacements, within department guidelines.
  • Oversees opening and closing procedures of library, in conjunction with the Department Heads– Patron Services.
  • Creates positive experiences for library patrons by effectively and efficiently performing job tasks; presents a positive image of the library in attitude, communications and appearance while performing duties in both the public and staff areas.
  • Demonstrates a professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, coworkers and volunteers.
  • Stays current on DCL’s culture of safety by following library safety policy guidelines and safety rules. Practices effective personal and branch safety.
  • Performs other work duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Requires excellent patron service skills and experience. Must consistently practice the “patron comes first” philosophy.
  • Requires strong knowledge, skills and experience in training, coaching, developing, evaluating and supervision of multiple full-time and part-time staff.
  • Possesses general working knowledge of the essential circulation and material handling staff duties. Must have willingness and ability to learn District circulation, material handling and patron services policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to learn, evaluate and teach staff effective and efficient circulation system functions and procedures.
  • Requires the ability to work independently and to be a proactive self-starter.
  • Must demonstrate a positive and professional attitude and image in order to effectively represent the District. Must exhibit a willingness to cooperate with patrons, library staff members, volunteers, technical, support services and administration staff members.
  • Must have the ability to learn and become proficient in functions and technology required to perform job duties, working effectively independently or as part of a team to complete tasks as assigned.
  • Must communicate effectively using English. Must read, write and understand English at a level appropriate to the position.
  • Computer Skills: Must demonstrate proficiency in computer use including internet, email, Microsoft Office Products (or equivalent). Keyboard skills required at an equivalent of typing 50 words per minute with minimal errors. Must be able to learn and become proficient with equipment and software programs as required to effectively and efficiently perform assigned duties.
  • Physical Abilities: Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to:Support all aspects of operating a seven-day-a-week library. Work at computer workstations, repetitively for extended periods. Regularly participate in meetings or events at various locations and hours. Access and transport relevant materials up to 35 pounds, and read a minimum 8 point font, regularly. On an occasional basis, tolerate residual smoke, dust, mold or foreign substances on materials.
