Job Description

The Senior Network Administrator is responsible for the network architecture and network security of the District’s IT infrastructure. The position ensures the stable operation of the in-house computer LAN/WAN network. This includes planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all network hardware, software, and communication links. The position is responsible for the availability of the district network infrastructure through analysis and trouble-shooting. Also ensures server availability through analysis and trouble-shooting, providing support for network users within designated guidelines.

Douglas County Libraries is a fast paced continually evolving energetic environment. Top candidates must be highly motivated individuals who are willing to take on challenging initiatives and are capable of working effectively; both independently and with others as a team. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required for periodic off-hours maintenance. Candidates must be willing and able to work in a 24x7 on-call rotation as needed.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Operations Management

  • Designs, deploys and maintains a mission-critical network infrastructure.
  • Manages servers, including e-mail, print, VoIP, and backup servers and their associated operating systems and software.
  • Manages security solutions, including firewall, anti-virus, and intrusion detection systems.
  • Assists the IT team with general infrastructure tasks such as configuring servers, configuring network storage systems, and installing server virtualization software (e.g. VMware.
  • Manages all network hardware and equipment, including routers, switches, hubs, and UPSs.
  • Ensures network connectivity of all workstations.
  • Administers all equipment, hardware and software upgrades.
  • Utilizes network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information.
  • Administers and maintains end user accounts, permissions, and access rights.
  • Performs server and security audits.
  • Performs system backups and recovery.
  • Monitors and tests network performance and provides network performance statistics and reports.
  • Recommends, schedules, and performs network improvements, upgrades, and repairs.
  • Inspects, maintains, and where necessary replaces network cabling, voice/data jacks, and other network-related equipment.
  • Ensure network and IP connectivity of all workstations, application servers, and back-end office infrastructure.
  • Monitors and manages all networking equipment and maintains activity logs.
  • Configures IPsec and manages virtual private networks (VPN).
  • Documents current network and design upgrades in various written formats (VISIO, MS Project, Word, etc.).
  • Provides guidance and support to junior members of the infrastructure team.

Strategy & Planning

  • Performs network design and capacity planning.
  • Develops, implements and maintains policies, procedures and associated training plans for network resource administration, appropriate use, and disaster recovery.
  • Develops and implements policies for network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory, related documentation, and technical specifications information.
  • Establishes service level agreements with end users and third party service providers.

Acquisition & Deployment

  • Conducts research on network products, services, protocols, and standards in support of network procurement and development efforts.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Strong customer service orientation is essential.
  • Must be a flexible and supportive team player. Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is preferred.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities are essential.
  • Working technical knowledge of network and experience using Windows, Linux and MAC PC operating systems, required.
  • Three to five years technical experience in the design, implementation and support of data networks.
  • Three to five years of experience installing and supporting Microsoft (Windows 2000 / 2003 / 2008 server environments.
  • Experience with migrating servers to new hardware platforms.
  • Experience supporting users at remote locations.
  • Extensive application support experience with Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Microsoft Exchange, IIS, and Apache.
  • Strong L2 switching experience required. Comfort with VLANs preferred.
  • Experience with Cisco and Extreme required. Industry certification for either desired.
  • Familiarity with IPSEC VPN, VRF, DNS and BIND required.
  • Working technical knowledge of current network hardware, protocols, and standards, including TCP/IP and UDP protocols required.
  • Experience with protocol analyzers and network test equipment required.
  • Hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience supporting all facets of Active Directory including GPOs, user objects, groups, OUs, etc.
  • Three to five years’ experience with server virtualization technology such as VMware, Citrix and/or Microsoft Hyper-V environments desired.
  • Knowledge of remote display protocols such as RDP and ICA/HDX desired.
  • Prior experience with pf or iptables desired.
  • Scripting or automation skills to streamline network configuration desired.
  • Experience with vendor negotiations to facilitate problem resolution is desired.
  • Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws is desired.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to conduct research into networking issues and products as required.
  • Must be self-motivated and directed.
  • Must have strong project management skills. Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment is essential.
  • Must be detail-oriented.
