Job Description

The University of Denver Libraries seeks an energetic, creative, and progressive professional for the position of Cataloging and Metadata Librarian.  This position serves as the expert/lead on cataloging practices and policies within the Cataloging Department and throughout the University of Denver Libraries, overseeing all aspects of cataloging and bibliographic and authority control. Required Experience:

  • Masters’ degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent
  • Minimum of two years recent cataloging experience
  • Minimum of one year experience in supervision, workflow management, and metadata project management
  • Experience cataloging a variety of bibliographic and physical formats
  • Experience cataloging materials through a networked cataloging utility such as OCLC, in an integrated library system, such as Sierra
  • Experience in performing name, series, and subject authority work
  • Ability to train staff and prepare effective training material and other documentation
  • Catalog maintenance experience, particularly in quality control issues related to access to library resources
  • Understanding of how cataloging decisions impact all areas of the ILS
  • Understanding of metadata best practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AACR2, RDA, MARC21, LCSH, LC classification, and of development and trends in the field
  • Knowledge of one or more foreign languages
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated management, organizational, and analytical skills; creative and innovative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to lead, supervise, and work in a team environment
  • Flexibility in response to changing circumstances

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in an academic or research library
  • Three or more years’ experience supervising staff in a cataloging department
  • Minimum of two years recent cataloging experience
  • Experience working with systems utilized by the University of Denver Libraries, such as Sierra, Encore, Summon, and MarcEdit
  • Familiarity with the programs of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), and training in authority creation according to NACO and SACO standards
  • Knowledge of emerging metadata standards and frameworks such as BIBFRAME, FRBR, and FRAD
  • Awareness of electronic resource management, digital preservation, and scholarly communication issues as they relate to cataloging
  • Knowledge of user experience design, particularly as it affects access to resources in a library catalog

SALARY, RANK, BENEFITS:

Competitive salary.  Faculty status, non-tenure track appointment, with rank depending on experience and qualifications. Faculty hired at the rank of Assistant Professor are required to apply for promotion to Associate Professor in or before the sixth year. An initial appointment above Assistant Professor is possible if experience, scholarship, and service are determined, through a faculty appointment process, to be consistent with library faculty guidelines for each academic rank. All promotions in rank and extensions of contract are based upon performance in three core areas of responsibility:  librarianship, scholarship/research, and service.
