Job Description

Background Information:

Become a Librarian in Books & Borrowing and join an exciting and innovative department at Denver Public Library’s Central branch. The successful candidate will demonstrate passion and creativity in providing exemplary customer service to the public.

What You’ll Do:

Work at the Central Library in the Books and Borrowing Department to create positive experiences for library customers on the floor and in the stacks by performing professional library work, including roving reference, whole advisory services and other duties as assigned. Coordinate with the Books & Borrowing team and other departments to maintain and facilitate access to nonfiction, fiction and international language adult print collections. Actively market the collection through displays, blogs and other channels. Perform collection maintenance with sensitivity to supporting the depth and breadth in a floating collection. Serve a diverse clientele of all ages. Provide outreach to adults in the community through various means, which may include work with Mobile Services. Communicate effectively about issues and initiatives with customers, coworkers and supervisors. Collaborate with co-workers across job levels and work units to support various strategic initiatives.  

You Have:

Knowledge of collection maintenance and basic reference skills.  Skill in interpreting, communicating and presenting information, both orally and in writing.  Skill in using various technologies.  Ability to organize materials and information.  Ability to thrive working in a changing environment with public contact, providing service to people from all backgrounds and age groups.  Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers and community.  Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.  Ability to multi-task and prioritize.  Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility.  Ability to stand for extended periods of time, push full carts of materials and lift up to 25 pounds.  Ability to use extensive workplace and other technology including email, internet, databases, eMedia, social media and other software.  Ability to pass a background check after the offer to hire has been made.

A Master’s in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution or plans to receive one within 90 days. 

Spanish language fluency (preferred, not required).

Experience in providing high volume, innovative library service (preferred, not required). 

We Provide:

$19.62- $25.50 per hour starting salary range; $19.62 - $31.39 per hour full salary range.

Although the full salary range for this position is provided, offers are typically made within the starting salary range and depend on qualifications.  The City and County of Denver benefit package will be offered.

Regular, full-time, 40 hours per week. The schedule will be determined by the needs of the branch and will include evening and weekend hours.
