Job Description

Promotes and coordinates the use of instructional resources, technology, and equipment which will enrich the curriculum, stimulate growth, and challenge students in their research, study, and lifelong learning. 

Ensures the effective use of information, and empowers students to be critical thinkers, readers, skillful researchers, effective communicators, and ethical users of information. 

Collaborates with classroom and content teachers to design and implement lessons and units of instruction and assesses student learning and instructional effectiveness to ensure World Class Outcomes and Targets, the 4C’s, and 21st century skills integration. Provides the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the school library program is aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of the school and the school district, and is an integral component of the learning/instructional program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the school library program supports student learning and is aligned with the mission, goals, and World Class outcomes of the school and the school district

Assume an active, responsible leadership role in departmental, faculty, curriculum, differentiation, 21st century learning, content standards, and other decision-making teams in the school

Create learning opportunities at the building and district level collaboratively to ensure that the full range of literacy skills (information, media, visual, digital, global, and technology literacy) are included to meet content standards and develop World Class learners

Systematically integrate information literacy, 21st century learning skills, and technology that incorporate multiple literacies into content areas through collaborative planning and co-teaching with classroom teachers

Collaborate with classroom teachers to support the design and implementation of formative, interim, and summative assessments to analyze and evaluate World Class outcomes and students’ 21st century skills to differentiate and improve instruction

Collaboratively plan World Class learning experiences by providing group and individual instruction that fosters critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity

Promote and provide literacy support and advocate reading for World Class learning

Provide and plan professional development opportunities within the school and district in collaboration with leadership and staff on new resource information, copyright and fair use updates, and district 

Research, identify, evaluate and incorporate new information-based technologies as appropriate in the teaching and learning environment to supplement school resources, connect the school with the global 
learning community, communicate with students and teachers, and provide access to library services

Integrate and promote instructional technology, print resources, electronic databases, and online resources to meet teacher and student needs and improve learning

Instruct students in the ethical use of information and demonstrate a commitment to maintaining intellectual freedom

Understand copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property in order to promote and encourage the ethical use of information by students and staff
Instruct students in the ethical use of social media and plan educationally meaningful ways to incorporate social networking into learning 

Research and network with global experts to provide real time web-conferencing opportunities for learning

Instruct students in processes for evaluation of resources 

Create a digital learning commons and maintain frequent and timely communication to stakeholders through this learning commons website, newsletters, e-mail, and other formats providing ubiquitous 24/7 access to information and resources

Maintain and develop a library collection in accordance with district policy that is up-to-date, and aligned to the DCSD World Class learning outcomes, learners’ needs, teaching styles, and instructional strategies used within the school community by acquiring current print and electronic resources

Train and supervise technology assistants, classified librarians, clerks, volunteers, and student staff in the performance of their duties; provide input to their evaluators.

Create a learning commons environment that is inviting, flexible, accessible, stimulating, and conducive to individual and collaborative learning

Plan and coordinate school-wide special programs and initiatives for literacy, 21st Century Skills, and technology

Prepare and administer the library budget, including general and categorical funds to support specific program goals; select, purchase, process, distribute and inventory print, electronic resources, and other media-related resources to support the school’s instructional program

Develop and implement policies and procedures for the organization of the Library Media Center/Learning Commons resources and equipment to assure resources are available when needed

Conduct ongoing research and evaluation to compile, maintain, and analyze essential records, data, and statistics of the learning commons operations for continuous program improvement

Manage a computer-based circulation system

Research and implement guiding principles for a learning commons environment through professional associations, study, and research

Perform other related duties as assigned or requested
