Job Description

BROAD SCOPE OF POSITION:
It is the mission of the Pikes Peak Library District to seek,engage, and transform lives through library services and resources that enrich individual lives and build community. This position operates in a diverse environment to help fulfill the library’s mission by providing general information and assistance to the public and participating in a wide range of support activities for Adult Services.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of basic library practices and procedures
2. Ability to promote the use of library resources and programs through effective communications
3. Ability to work independently without close supervision
4. Ability to conduct effective patron interviews to determine a user’s needs
5. Ability to instruct patrons in library resources
6. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
7. Possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
8. Ability to exhibit sound professional judgement and demeanor in all public interactions
9. Ability to think and act appropriately under pressure while serving on the public desk
10. Ability to promote library resources and programs
11. Ability to represent the Library District with tact and courtesy
12.Ability to use personal computers, micro forms equipment, and other business machines effectively.
13. Proficiency with computer applications and databases; experience using Microsoft Word, Exel, and Outlook strongly preferred.
14. Ability to work as an effective team member, have a "whatever-it-takes" work ethic, and have an excellent customer service attitude.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Works on the public service desks 15 hours a week assisting patrons in person and over the phone.
2. Provides excellent customer service and maintains a courteous, positive image of the library when interacting with patrons and staff
3. Refers patrons to appropriate areas for assistance; assists patrons in locating library materials and searches a variety of reference sources
4. Maintains Periodical collection–processing, checking in and shelving new issues and pulling old issues, collects, stamps, check in and labels newspapers; filing updates in loose-leaf reference services; pull, deletes and discards old periodicals on a monthly basis.
5. Conducts monthly magazine sale and bi-annual periodical use survey
6. Provides general assistance and information about the library’s services and procedures
7. Offers instruction and assistance to patrons in using specific library resources and tools including: PAC, Community Databases, Microsoft Office software, searching the web, etc.
8. Maintains confidentiality in all patron and staff interactions
9. Teaches computer classes to the public
10. Refers patrons to reference staff or outside sources/collections as needed
11. Assists reference librarians with various tasks, projects, etc.
12. May promote library services through tours, demonstrations, talks and displays
13. Completes Periodicals and Tracer tasks and assists in ILL
14. Uses computers, printers, machines, fax, and other business machines
15. Performs other related duties as assigned
