Job Description

Position Summary

The Center's founding in 1964 was envisaged by Fort Lewis College President John Reed, funded by Arthur and Morley Ballantine with a supplemental contribution from Mr. A. M. Camp, and facilitated by Fort Lewis College's contribution of space and staffing. The Center's first Director, the late Fort Lewis College history professor Robert W. Delaney, served for twenty-two years, and stated that "the original and stated purpose of the Center was to collect, collate, and have ready for use by qualified users, all aspects of the history of the Southwest."

The Center facilities include the museum, archival and collections repositories, a special collections library, research offices, and classrooms, labs, and offices for the College's Anthropology, Native American and Indigenous Studies, and Environmental Studies academic degree programs. The building opened to staff and the collections in the spring of 2001.

The Library and Archives Specialist is a 24-hour/week, 12 months/year (.6 FTE) exempt staff position. This position reports to the Director of the Center of Southwest Studies.  

The Library and Archives Specialist position consists of technical duties in support of the overall operation and management of the Delaney Southwest Research Library and Archives at the Center of Southwest Studies.

Duties

  • Assists patrons with library circulation and retrieval of library materials, including archival collections.
  • Provides reference and research assistance to patrons.
  • Under the direction of the archives manager, assists with college archives and records management.
  • Performs copy cataloging under the direction of the librarian.
  • Mends and repairs materials and assists in monitoring book processing conducted by student workers.
  • Assists with the Center’s public programs, events, and exhibits as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; customer service experience.
  • Computer skills to include use of library catalogs and Internet-based software.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Familiarity with research methods.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience in a library and/or archives setting.
  • Working knowledge of Millennium, MARC, and OCLC.
  • Knowledge of standard cataloging practices, collections management and/or library databases, and archival and records management methods.
  • Ability and desire to contribute to the overall mission of the Center of Southwest Studies and Fort Lewis College.
