Job Description

The University of Denver Libraries is seeking an innovative, dynamic, and collaborative professional for the position of Science and Engineering Reference Librarian. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Student and Scholar Services.

The Science and Engineering Reference Librarian serves as liaison to the physical and life sciences, engineering, computer science, geography, and mathematics departments, with responsibility for provision of research services, instruction, and collection development in those areas. Participating fully as part of the reference and collection development teams, the librarian provides hour-long general and specialized consultations for students, faculty, and staff in the Research Center, and teaches information literacy workshops in assigned disciplines and participates in instructional programming for first-year foundational courses. This position is also responsible for building collections to meet the research and curricular needs of undergraduate and graduate students and faculty in the sciences, and for managing the collections budgets in the areas assigned. This position also serves a key role in the expansion of the librarys research data management practices and services. The librarian actively engages in scholarly activities through research and publication and participates in professional organizations, as well as library and campus committees. Finally, the person in this position intentionally integrates diversity and inclusiveness into all aspects of the library.

Required Experience:

  • ALA accredited masters degree in Library and Information Science
  • Experience providing information/reference services and in building collections
  • Ability to actively engage and work in a team environment
  • Flexible and adaptable reference skills to handle a variety of reference activities and hour-long research consultations at a busy Research Center
  • Demonstrated capacity to build strong connections with liaison departments in order to provide effective research instructional programs and relevant collections
  • Demonstrated capability to actively engage in professional development and scholarly activities through research, publication, and service to professional organizations
  • Strong interpersonal, collaborative, organizational, analytical, and communication skills 
  • The ability to work independently, effectively, and confidentially, using tact and excellent judgment
  • Strong teaching skills with knowledge of information literacy best practices and standards for science and technology

Preferred Experience:

  • Academic degree or concentration in science or engineering
  • Experience in an academic or science library
  • Experience with science information/reference services
  • Ability to analyze collections data using Excel or other similar tools
  • Knowledge of research data management best practices and tools
