Job Description

**Work Schedule: Varies, weekend and evening hours included.**

The Library Associate provides customer service and back room support for library operations. Welcomes and offers assistance to patrons. Performs circulation functions. Prepares library materials. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Assists patrons in identifying, locating, and using library resources to include print, non-print, and digital resources.   Performs all circulation functions. Includes creating patron accounts, issuing cards, checking materials in and out, maintaining patron database, and collecting fines.    Assists patrons in the use of library computers and provides assistance with use of email, word processing, and other common software. Provides guidance to patrons with basic functions such as saving and printing of documents.    Assists Reference and Children’s Librarians with collection maintenance through weeding shelving, and merchandising materials.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

Processes Library materials by entering information into the acquisitions and cataloging systems. Assists in maintaining the bibliographic database.   Handles homebound services by selecting and checking out materials for homebound patrons. Arranges delivery through volunteers.   Processes inter-library loan requests (ILL). Facilitates and records interlibrary loan requests to and from other libraries.    Assists with programs and story times.   Performs other duties as assigned and required. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in any field.  Must possess 2 years of customer service experience. Library and/or bookstore experience preferred; preference will be given to candidates with this experience.

Knowledge

Basic knowledge of:  

  • Public library operations
  • Maintaining database records
  • General information technologies to include portable computing devices and research techniques

Skills and Abilities

Computer - Basic skills required for accurate data entry and records management.   Intermediate skills needed to instruct patrons in the use of common software programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, email, downloadables, and search engines.    Communication - Intermediate skills required to work in a team-oriented environment. Also needed to interact with patrons and provide customer service.
