Job Description

DEFINITION: Under direct supervision of the Head of Children and Teen Services, perform a variety of professional library duties including reference service, collection development, program development, and related work as required. This position will require working with children, teens, parents and educators from diverse backgrounds; a significant portion of this job will be working with Young Adults and purchasing and maintaining the library’s Young Adult collection.  

PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Assist Library patrons at a public reference desk in assigned department. Interview patrons by telephone, by electronic medium (e.g. email, instant messaging or texting), or in person to determine needs and locate desired information or library materials using the computerized databases, the internet, library materials, other reference tools, or contacts with other libraries. Accompany or direct patrons to the book/material resources and instruct and assist patrons in the use of library resources, both printed and computer-based. Recommend reading resources for purposes of education, information, and recreational reading. Prepare a collection development plan for the teen section of the library collection. Select new materials, identify materials for removal from the collection, and manage an assigned acquisitions budget. Maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the public.  Collaborate with other Library and City staff to provide shared services and programs. Develop or assist in developing and presenting library programs and services for children and teens.   

Depending upon assignment, may also perform these Essential Duties: Develop outreach to local schools and community agencies, conducting class visits and tours of the library, and providing library services directly to schools and the City’s Youth and Senior Centers, and community agencies.

Additional duties: Promote services and programs, write promotional materials or newspaper releases and create and  maintain web content.   Develop  a vibrant online presence for Children’s and Teen  department through use of social media.  Assist in the development of library policies and procedures. May assign, oversee, and review the work of volunteers or library employees. Assist and instruct patrons in the use of computer software programs, electronic resources, and the Internet. Prepare book displays. Conduct thorough bibliographic searches and prepare bibliographies. Provide coverage and back up to other service desks as needed.

Special Qualifications: Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency desirable. Knowledge of: Principles and practices of professional library work including methods and techniques of library classification and cataloging; community needs, interests, and demographic factors; reference methods, techniques, and resources used in library work and materials and services available in public libraries; computer applications including word processing, automated library systems, and the Internet; subject areas to which assigned such as literature, humanities, languages, and sciences; library computer systems.

Ability to: Assist library patrons of diverse age, nationality, education, and socio-economic backgrounds; respond to reference and related library questions; prepare and conduct programs for all ages; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, other City departments, and members of the community; work as part of a team; communicate clearly both verbally and in writing; stay abreast of new trends in library science, education, and  technology and apply modern practices to policies, programs, and services; understand and apply state educational standards and curriculum needs to Library services and programs.
