Overall Job Objective Benefits Supplemental Questions

Under general direction to manage, recruit and train volunteers for the Maria Rogers Oral History Program (MROHP) of the Carnegie Branch Library for Local History. Conducts and transcribes oral histories. Responsible for archiving new interviews into the library’s database; managing the online database of oral history interviews, collaborating with other oral history programs, administering all aspects of the MROHP, and performing related duties as required.
Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Recruits volunteers in partnership with Boulder Public Library (BPL) volunteer coordinator. Trains volunteers to interview, film, transcribe, and archive oral histories. Provides feedback to individual volunteers to promote continuous improvement. Plans and runs monthly meetings for volunteers (10 times per year) to facilitate group connections, share information and develop interest in oral history work, and discuss intellectual property issues. Supervises volunteers’ oral history work, including the assignment of transcription or summarization of interviews, physical filing of interview materials, and updating of narrators’ files.

2. Registers new interviews and creates CDs and DVDs of wav and mp3 audio files of interviews. Reviews transcripts/summaries for accuracy and creates cataloging information for interviews. Works with narrators to review and incorporate changes into interviews. Corresponds with narrators by sending a thank you letter and CD/DVD for each interview.

3. Supervises the maintenance of the online system for access to the oral histories and integration of access with the BPL online catalog

4. Maintains recording and duplicating equipment and creates reproductions of interview CDs/DVDs for patron access in the library collection.

5. Produces quarterly newsletter including a listing of newly archived interviews. Provides newsletters to volunteers, library administration, Boulder Library Foundation board members, and posts online.

6. Collects and reports volunteer hours, interviews, acquisition and archiving statistics, and Google Analytics usage statistics.

7. Creates quarterly report about program accomplishments for the Carnegie Branch Library Manager, and an annual report about program accomplishments.

8. Creates flyers and other materials to enhance use of program and encourage monetary donations to program.

9. Collects and administers monetary donations to program.


10. Mentors library staff and community members and oral history groups regarding best practices, methodologies, and resources. Teaches oral history techniques at local schools, universities, and community groups. Represents the BPL by making presentations at oral history conferences

11. Collaborateswith government, schools, and other organizations to create and carry out collaborative oral history projects

12. Creates and maintains other technological access to the oral histories, which may include but is not limited to the following: blogs, Facebook, podcasts, and videos.

13. Other:
Performs related duties as required by management to meet the needs of the city.
Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.

ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE:

Qualifications:
College degree in History, Communications, Journalism or a related field and a minimum one year of experience working with oral history collections and archiving processes. Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Demonstrated administrative and program management skills. Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Knowledge of community resources and organizations using oral history. Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills including the ability to make public presentations. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Experience with Windows-based applications. Ability and willingness to work varied hours as required, including evenings and Saturdays in order to conduct training and attend meetings. Have and maintain acceptable background information including criminal conviction record and credit history.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS – In addition to the required minimum qualifications:
Knowledge of Boulder County history. Experience supervising and training volunteers. Experience interviewing potential volunteers or employees. Experience using video and digital audio recorders, DVD authoring and duplicating machines, and a variety of software including Microsoft Word, Excel, MS Access, as well as audio and video editing programs. Experience with creating blog posts and podcasts.

Physical and Mental Effort: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate computer equipment and other office equipment. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to work in an office setting. Work Environment: Works primarily in a clean, comfortable environment. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises.
