Job Description

The position catalogs advanced copy and original cataloging for print, non-print, and digital formats in many subject areas in accordance with national and local system standards; applies cataloging standards using RDA and DACS; assigns subject entries applying LCSH, FAST, and other standards; applies classification using LCC, SUDOC, and local systems; applies and creates authority records according NACO standards

Manage acquisitions functions working with orders, vendors, and invoices in the online library system; supports Collection Development by investigating and managing online book purchases directly or in packages via knowledge base, patron-driven access, etc.; process monograph orders; supports staff by resolving issues. Additionally: Verify, order, receive and process monographs; receive and process gift materials.

The position performs cataloging and database maintenance activities for item, holding, acquisitions and serials data to ensure quality, consistency, and currency of the online library system and discovery service.  

Participates in special cataloging and retrospective projects

This position reports to and works with the Head of Acquisitions/Bibliographic Control. The position responds to questions from staff regarding cataloging and acquisitions; participates in Library and Department planning; participates in local and external professional activities.

Additional Info & Requirements

Required

  1. An ALA-accredited M.L.S. or M.L.I.S degree including Cataloging.

Preferred

  1. Two years progressively responsible experience in copy and original cataloging in multiple formats using OCLC in an academic library showing comprehension of cataloging and metadata principles and standards.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to: apply rules, standards and practices for organizing information; catalog with a working knowledge of RDA, AACR, MARC, DACS; identify bibliographic relationships and how it will be incorporated in linked data; perform subject analysis applying LCSH, FAST, AAT, and others; collocate materials using LCC and local schemes.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of ability to apply and create authority records at local and national level (NACO)
  4. Experience with acquisitions management to include print, media, and online resources; prefer experience or knowledge of procedures for managing knowledge base resources, and acquisitions of online books as well as using short-term loans and other models.
  5. Experience in technical services activities in an integrated library system. Demonstrated experience maintaining bibliographic, authority, item, holding, serials and acquisitions online library system data.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment; ability to plan, coordinate, and implement projects; good organizational skills
  7. Excellent written and oral communication skills; an aptitude for complex and detailed work; strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills; experience with MS Word and Excel

The Chester Fritz Library is centrally located on the UND campus. Collegiate Gothic in style, the Library building is a campus landmark, constructed in 1960.
