Job Description

It is the mission of the Pikes Peak Library District to seek, engage, and transform lives through library services and resources that enrich individual lives and build community.  This position operates in a diverse environment to help fulfill PPLD’s mission by hiring, training, directing and supervising a staff of full-time employees (circulation department only), part-time employees, substitute employees, and volunteers to circulate, return and shelve all library materials with superior customer service, timeliness and accuracy.  In addition the person in this position will conduct research and provide general information and assistance to the public, serves as “person-in-charge” in the absence of the Library Manager and participates in a wide variety of support activities and programming.   

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides excellent customer service and maintains a courteous, positive image of the library when interacting with patrons and staff; maintains patron and staff confidentiality
  • Manages and assigns daily workflow; assigns bi-weekly work schedules (schedules substitute employees as needed)
  • Assists with supervision, coaching, and performance evaluation of regular staff, substitutes, and volunteers; verifies and approves timesheets; maintains personnel records; trains new employees
  • Compiles and reports monthly statistics
  • Participates in the interviewing, selection, and hiring process of new staff; may participate in staff terminations as necessary
  • Makes operational and budgetary recommendations to the Community Library’s Manager
  • Submits facilities’ maintenance, security, and IT work orders
  • Authorizes petty cash purchase orders; reports cash receipts
  • May serve as a IT liaison for branch
  • Contributes to evaluation and management of the branch’s collection
  • Assists and instructs patrons with searches for materials and on-line information, computer software applications, community referrals, and outside sources or collections; and refers patrons and in-depth research questions to reference staff if necessary
  • May act as “person-in-charge” (PIC) of the library as assigned; assumes responsibility for safe and effective operation of the library (including the initiation of emergency procedures as needed) and ensures that Serious Incident Reports and Insurance Reports are completed properly and submitted in a timely manner
  • Creates, promotes, and presents programs and outreach for multiple library audiences, particularly Adult and Senior. May teach computer and other classes for the public.  Participates in community outreach for all patron groups.
  • May serve on teams or advisory boards as assigned
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Additional Info & Requirements

  • a minimum of three years of library or other public service work experience;  strongly prefer supervisory experience
  • Proficiency on computer applications and databases, including Microsoft Office software
  • Requires excellent communication skills, the ability to work in a team environment, a “whatever it takes” work ethic, and an excellent customer service attitude.
  • Bilingual ability is a plus in serving our diverse patrons
