Title: Director of Library Services

 

Essential Functions and Objectives:

Denver Public Schools seeks a visionary leader to serve as the Director of Library Services. The Director of Library Services will provide district-wide leadership and support for the successful implementation of information literacy and technology instruction aligned to Colorado Academic Standards and Common Core State Standards, as well as library programming in Denver Public Schools.

Leadership

  • Provide ongoing leadership and strategic vision for Library Services in DPS to ensure alignment with and impact on the district’s core values and the Denver Plan
  • Lead district-wide implementation of Colorado Academic Standards and Common Core State Standards with research-based strategies for effective information literacy and technology instruction
  • Support the work in creating and implementing assessments in alignment with the requirements of SB 191
  • Direct library automation systems (including but not limited to the cataloging, acquisitions, public access, media booking, and interlibrary loan) and circulating collections (including but not limited to the Classroom Resource Library, Video/Media Library, Professional Library, all other multi-media Resources)
  • Establish a shared vision and culture for the Library Services team, as well as the school library staff across DPS

Management

  • Work collaboratively to manage the 1998, 2003, and 2012 Mill Levy initiatives and to ensure site-based implementations are aligned to the district’s stated goals for these voter-approved funds
  • Lead, coach, develop, and retain high performing Library Services staff responsible for standards implementation, teacher professional development, assessment support, library programming, and community outreach and events
  • Manage the central DPS Library Services Department budget in accordance with DPS budgetary policies and practices
  • Oversee successful operations and human resources practices of the Library Services Department and ensure compliance with all policies and procedures
  • Identify and seek potential funding sources to help support Library programming in DPS schools
  • Assist in the design of new and remodeled libraries

Professional Learning

  • Measure and monitor teacher librarian instructional practices alongside other DPS instructional models, program objectives, and performance targets
  • Remain current on educational research in successful K-12 Library programming
  • Connect and actively engage with local and national Librarian thought leaders, foundations, non-profits, organizations, businesses, vendors, and others who are actively pursuing and developing innovative Library services / programs and instructional models and strategies

Communication

  • Communicates alignment of Library Services programming to the DPS vision, goals, priorities, and values
  • Promote and communicate all aspects of Library Services programing and development through marketing and outreach efforts
  • Review existing Library Services systems and structures to identify best practices, areas for prioritization, and program evaluation
  • Collaborate with Interdisciplinary Learning departments, all Chief Academic and Innovation Office departments, and Chief Schools’ Office to implement Colorado Academic Standards and Common Core State Standards

Knowledge, Experience, & Other Qualifications

Proven ability to effectively:

  • Perform project needs analysis, task analysis, and gap analysis
  • Establish and maintain project scope and goals; prepare project management documentation
  • Prioritize and schedule responsibilities for oneself and others
  • Evaluate instructional programs and opportunities
  • Facilitate user groups, focus groups, meetings, and project teams
  • Communicate with diverse groups, including marketing presentations to various constituencies
  • Prepare reports, professional correspondences, and procedural guides and manuals
  • Write and prepare grant and fundraising proposals

Extensive knowledge of:

  • Information literacy and technology instructional experiences, including school-based administration and instruction
  • Best practices for the design and delivery of high quality information literacy and technology instruction
  • Application of learning theories to instructional design (e.g., behavioral, cognitive and constructivist)
  • Best practice uses of rich media resources in learning environments
  • Project management fundamentals

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred in Library Science or Library and Information Science, School Administration, Educational Policy, and/or Instructional Design or equivalent.
  • Five years of experience in a school or district leadership role in K-12 education. Five years classroom teaching experience as a teacher librarian.
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s license, appropriate insurance coverage, and an acceptable driving record for the past three years
  • Colorado Teaching and Administrator licensure preferred with teacher librarian or school librarian endorsement
