As Assistant State Librarian you will be able to put your management and community outreach skills to work in a variety of areas. The Assistant State Librarian oversees Circulation, Interlibrary Loan, Research/Documents, Digital Services, Cataloging and Metadata, and the Braille and Talking Book Program and a staff of 15 FTE. These are exciting times as the State Library chooses a new ILS, makes state publications available in digital format, works with libraries to create a new statewide Interlibrary Loan model, and serves the growing community of people unable to read standard print. If you are a librarian who is looking for a new challenge, this is the job for you.

Some travel required.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Master's degree in library and information science or master's degree in special education is preferred.

Knowledge of:

  • library science principles, methods, practices, and systems;
  • national standards and rules for the library and national standards governing the digitizing, cataloging, lending and borrowing, federal document depositories, Braille and Talking books, and visually impaired individuals;
  • public administration including planning, budgeting, policy development, and personnel management;
  • the state's process for promulgation of laws and rules;
  • grant processes;
  • procurement and payment processes;
  • data collection and analysis, and report writing;
  • braille and talking book programs and the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped;
  • services to the blind and visually impaired.

Ability to:

  • deal tactfully with others;
  • communicate information clearly and concisely;
  • communicate clearly both verbally and in writing;
  • influence others and encourage teamwork;
  • access computer systems and databases;
  • evaluate policies and procedures and interpret and apply them;
  • react in a positive manner to new situations;
  • work well under pressure.
