Job Description

Mesa County Libraries is currently in search of a smart, team-oriented and innovative leader to provide professional leadership coordinating and supervising all aspects of Public Services department including taking the lead on implementing new projects such as RFID and future projects.

The successful candidate must enjoy the challenge of a fast-paced, project-oriented, and team focused environment, have the skills to lead the department utilizing operational capacity, and the knowledge to improve systems through review of data.  The Head of Public Services employee will serve as a member of the District's management team and will report to the Associate Director.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:  Performs all duties related to managing Pubic Services

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:  Library Assistants, Library Aides, Pages and Volunteers

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

1.  Oversee Public Services: Ensure that expert friendly assistance is provided to all patrons. Oversee that all circulation functions, materials handling, shelving, lists, collections and other tasks are completed accurately and in a timely manner. Schedule personnel and resources, organize and establish center priorities, and coordinate activities for optimum patron benefit. Work with other managers and staff to coordinate library procedures so that patrons throughout Mesa County receive consistent high-level service. Utilize, train, reward and recognize volunteers appropriately so they feel valued and contribute to a high functioning team environment in the Public Service department. Plan, prepare and administer a budget for capital and supply purchases to meet goals and objectives of the center. Coordinate and manage circulation technology and automation issues in collaboration with Marmot. Assist other centers with programming, outreach, training and serving patrons. Oversee Homebound operations to ensure effective service. Handle problems, concerns and emergencies in a professional manner and according to library policies and procedures.

2.  Supervise Staff: Develop Essential Functions and Performance Standards for department staff. Provide feedback on an ongoing basis and evaluate each employee annually. Hire and train new staff to be able to accomplish assigned objectives. Develop staff with coaching, and ongoing training opportunities so that they continue to grow and learn in their positions. Address employee performance problems in a proactive direct manner. Work with staff to create one cohesive team throughout the library district.

3.  Management Team: Participate in the Library District’s management team. Work with other managers to develop needed policies and procedures for the library, and interpret these for staff and patrons. Serve as an example for all staff in providing library service and communicating expectations. Stay current on library issues and trends. Actively participate and contribute to various library committees and activities. Maintain a fully trained staff and help insure that minimum staffing priorities are met district wide. Work with community organizations to enhance and promote library services. Take on other projects and tasks at the direction of the Library Director or Associate Director.

4.  Maintains self-development and keeps up-to-date on Library affairs

Attends monthly staff meetings and training; attends external trainings, stays aware of changes via staff wiki.

5.  Performs other duties as assigned or requested

Performs additional duties as opportunities arise that assist the department and the Library in achieving specified goals and objectives.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

2 – 3 years supervisory experience preferred

3 – 5 years library experience required

Bachelor’s degree required

MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited graduate program preferred

SCHEDULE:  May include some evening and weekend hours.
