Job Description

Background Information:

Become a Librarian at the Ross-Barnum Branch, 3570 W. First Ave. at Lowell Blvd., and work collaboratively to provide bilingual services and resources to a diverse customer base that includes new immigrants and their families.  Adult and children’s programming will be focuses of this branch as part of a bilingual and intergenerational environment.  The Ross-Barnum Branch serves a diverse community with an emphasis on programs and services to enhance the lives of our customers.   

What You’ll Do:

Create positive experiences for library customers by providing reference, readers/ media advisory, collection maintenance, ECRR-based story times, services to new immigrants and community outreach.  Fulfill the expectations of a diverse population, in particular addressing the largest language needs in the community, Spanish and Vietnamese.  Promote information access and nurture the interests of a rich and diverse community through library services for all ages.  Help design, present and/or establish a variety of programs that fit the needs of new immigrant families and a diverse community.  Staffs a busy reference desk, serving a diverse clientele of all ages and broad range of interests.  Build relationships with youth and their families to foster curiosity and provide homework and technology assistance.  Communicate effectively about issues and initiatives with customers, staff, volunteers and administration.  Oversee library operations as assigned.  

You Have:

Knowledge of library services for infancy through adolescence and positive youth development practices.   Knowledge of providing library services to customers with different levels of literacy and/or technology abilities.  Knowledge of the Public Library Association’s ECRR initiative and supporting materials/resources.  Knowledge of children’s literature.  Skill in interpreting, communicating and presenting information, both orally and in writing.  Skill welcoming and advocating for the information needs of immigrants and newcomers.  Skill in communicating with customers with varying degrees of English language ability.  Ability to meet the information, collection maintenance and reader/media needs of a diverse community of all ages. Ability to thrive in an environment with constant public contact with people from all backgrounds and age groups.  Ability to demonstrate positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers, volunteers and the community.  Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.  Ability to be innovative, flexible and well organized.  Ability to use extensive workplace and other technology including email, internet, databases, eMedia, social media and other software.  Ability to pass a background check after the offer to hire has been made. 

A Master’s in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution or plans to receive one within 90 days.

One-year of experience working with children in a structured environment (preferred, not required).  Spanish language fluency (preferred, not required).

Excellent customer service skills.

We Provide:

$19.83 - $25.77 per hour starting salary range; $19.83 - $31.72 per hour full salary range.

Although the full salary range for this position is provided, offers are typically made within the starting salary range and depend on qualifications.  The City and County of Denver benefit package will be offered.

Regular, full-time, 40 hours per week.  The schedule will be determined by the needs of the department and will include evening and weekend hours.
