Dean of the University Library
The University of New Hampshire invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the University Library. The Dean is the senior administrative and financial officer of the University Library, reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and is a member of the Deans' Council. Responsibilities include the direction, development, implementation, and evaluation of all aspects of library services. The Dean currently oversees 18 librarians with faculty status, 49 staff, and an effective budget of over $13 million that includes a $6 million materials budget. The Dean provides leadership in library and information technology, working closely with the University's Chief Information Officer, and collaborates in fundraising with UNH Advancement.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the capacity to advocate for the Library; foster an organizational culture based on respect, service, teamwork, personal and professional growth, and accountability; possess the leadership, managerial, and communication skills required to work effectively with the Library's many constituencies; display sensitivity and responsiveness to issues of diversity and multiculturalism; and be conversant in and skilled at addressing national trends in research universities and librarianship in a student-centered learning culture.
The Community
The University of New Hampshire (UNH), the flagship institution of the University System of New Hampshire, is not only a land-grant institution, but also a designated sea- and space-grant university, ranking among the top-tier Carnegie research institutions in the nation. The University is in the beautiful college town of Durham, NH, with campuses at UNH Manchester and UNH School of Law in Concord. UNH’s research endeavors include space science, climate change, marine science and ocean mapping, sociology, American history, and creative writing, all of which are nationally ranked. UNH’s research enterprise includes $144 million of annual grant and contract funding, and is regularly ranked in the top five for impact in environmental sciences research and publications. UNH, located in Durham on a 188-acre campus, 60 miles north of Boston, 8 miles from the Atlantic coast, is convenient to New Hampshire's lakes and mountains. The University enrolls 14,600 students and has over 600 full-time faculty. UNH’s tenure-track faculty are represented by the AAUP. Responsibility Center Management (RCM), a decentralized budget management system adopted in 2000, is a distinctive financial feature of the University.
The UNH Library includes the Dimond Library and branch libraries, which specialize in science, mathematics, and engineering. The Library holds 1.7 million volumes and offers extensive periodical holdings and digital resources. It is a member of the Boston Library Consortium and is a depository for federal and state documents. The University Library also shares resources with the University of New Hampshire at Manchester library and collaborates with the UNH School of Law library.
