Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:  

Trinidad State Junior College seeks a Director of Library Services for Trinidad State Junior College (TSJC) for its Trinidad and Valley campuses. The position is primarily responsible to provide innovative technology, unrestricted access to information, and the instructional resources necessary to enlighten and empower Trinidad State Junior College’s students, staff, and community to achieve their educational, professional, and personal goals. The Library serves both in-person and online learners at the Trinidad and Valley campuses.

The Director of Library Services provides leadership, direction and coordination of all library services and resources. Managing student personnel, this person leads efforts towards a learning commons model with an emphasis on digital resources and emerging technologies. This person is responsible for overseeing library services, coordinating strategic planning and assessment, hiring library hourly and work study staff and managing the library budget while sustaining a service-orientated and innovative library to support teaching and learning. The continued growth and development of essential library services on both campuses will be a priority.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING:

Under the Dean’s direction, the Director’s responsibilities are varied and include the management of hourly and work study staff, budgets, assessment and strategic planning. This person works collaboratively with faculty, administrators and staff to acquire, organize and promote the resources necessary to support instruction. Priorities include personnel management, collection management, outreach to faculty at the Trinidad and Valley campus, marketing, adding new educational technologies and supporting the long range plan towards a learning commons. This person participates in departmental and college accreditation processes by providing requested information and participating in accreditation efforts. The Library Director participates in campus committees and initiatives as well as programs to promote and advance libraries within the Colorado Community College System.

 Manage administrative duties including budget, acquisitions, assessment and strategic planning for Library Services on the Trinidad and Valley campuses. Provide visionary leadership in a team environment for all Library programs and services, including facility use, reference and instruction, circulation of materials, and other designated programs and services. Oversee all departmental operations including but not limited to budget preparation and oversight and submission of accurate required reports and library management.

Direct the marketing of TSJC’s information resources and collaborate with faculty to select resources that support the curricula. This is accomplished by establishing faculty support through interaction with the departments, Deans and the Vice President of Student Services. Communicate with the Trinidad and Valley campuses and surrounding community via emails, newsletters, staff meetings, department meetings, campus committees and coordination with other community college libraries and the Colorado State Library.

Evaluate new technology and update existing resources to keep the Library on the leading edge of library innovation. Lead migrations to new systems as appropriate;

Oversee day to day operations of Library.

Maintain knowledge of current issues and trends in academic information services such as instructional technology and design, information literacy, assessment, and copyright and fair use. Keep abreast of trends in academic libraries, educational technologies and how the library’s role is changing while encouraging professional development with the library staff.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university.
  • Five years of progressively responsible library work, 3 of which are in an academic library
  • Three years of supervisory experience
  • One year experience managing a budget
  • Demonstrated experience successfully implementing a large project or initiative
  • Library management experience
  • Competence with digital tools and services and the ability to learn quickly
  • Awareness of changing trends in the academic library field
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral and highly development interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff and management

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Working knowledge of all aspects of library services including reference, circulation, cataloging, ebooks, e-reserves, digital resources and learning object repositories
  • Library Director experience in a community college
  • Experience migrating an integrated library system
  • Experience using existing and emerging technologies to provide and enhance library and information services
