Job Description

SPANISH FLUENCY REQUIRED

Background Information:

Join the Early Literacy Department and work collaboratively to provide services and materials for young children and the adults in their lives.  This position supports the Library’s strategic initiatives of providing early literacy experiences to infants through kindergarten, connecting with parents and caregivers and developing school-age readers and life-long learners.  The Read Aloud Program matches volunteers and staff with Head Start and Early Childhood Education Centers in Denver and provides materials and training to ensure high-quality early literacy programming. Volunteers and staff read to classes on a weekly basis during the school year.  This position will work closely with the Early Literacy Outreach Librarian to manage the Northeast Denver expansion of the Read Aloud Program and will coordinate efforts with the Central Read Aloud Program.

What You’ll Do:

Work the majority of the time at the Green Valley Ranch Branch, 4856 N. Andes Ct.. to recruit a new corps of volunteers to provide Read Aloud programming in Northeast Denver.  Train, coach and support volunteers to maximize retention. Create positive experiences for library customers by providing community outreach, ECRR-based storytimes, reference, readers and media advisory. Manage a special collection of children’s materials and their distribution to volunteers and staff. Assist with program rewards, celebrations and special events. Maintain and build relationships with volunteers, teachers and school administrators via phone, email and classroom visits. Conduct observational visits and provide constructive feedback for readers.  Promote and nurture pre-reading and reading skills. Communicate effectively about early literacy issues and initiatives with customers, staff, volunteers and school administrators.  Build relationships with a variety of child-focused community organizations.

You Have:

Knowledge of library services for infancy through adolescence and current research in early literacy and child/brain development.  Knowledge of early literacy best practices in library and community settings.  Knowledge of the Public Library Association’s ECRR initiative and supporting materials/resources.  Skill in public speaking and sharing information effectively with groups of adults and children in both English and Spanish.  Skill in providing excellent internal and external customer service.  Ability to select children’s literature to support early literacy and early learning skills.  Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude, strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and a sense of humor.  Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner.  Ability to be innovative, flexible and well organized.  Ability to use extensive workplace and other technology including email, internet, databases, social media and other software.  Ability to pass a background check after the offer to hire has been made.

One year of experience working with children in a structured environment.  Experience working with schools, teachers, libraries or literacy organizations.

Experience working with and recruiting adult volunteers (preferred, not required).  

A Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution or a related field OR a Bachelor’s degree plus three years of experience in a related field.

A passion for serving Denver’s children and families by connecting them with the information, resources and programs within the Library and the community.

Spanish language fluency.

We Provide:

$21.19 - $27.55 per hour starting salary range; $21.19 - $33.91 per hour full salary range.

Although the full salary range for this position is provided, offers are typically made within the starting salary range and depend on qualifications.  The City and County of Denver benefit package will be offered. 

Regular, full-time, 40 hours per week.  The schedule will be determined by the needs of the branch and will include evening and weekend hours.
