Job Description

SPANISH FLUENCY REQUIRED

What You'd Do:

Work in the Early Literacy Department at the Central Library to create positive experiences for library customers by providing programming, reference and readers/media advisory. Plan and present English and Spanish language storytimes in preschool classrooms/childcare centers to children ages 0-5 years and their caregivers/teachers. Provide outreach programs for teachers, families and caregivers designed to promote effective, fun and simple early literacy activities in a variety of settings including home visits. Work cooperatively with staff, volunteers and supervisors to support the Read Aloud Program’s planning, communication and delivery activities. Provide organizational and instructional support for storytime professional development.

You Have:

Knowledge of and/or interest in child development, infancy through adolescence, and current research in early literacy and child/brain development. Knowledge of early literacy best practices in library and community settings. Knowledge of children’s literature. Knowledge of the public library’s and literacy’s role in the lives in of children and families. Skill in public speaking and sharing information effectively with groups of adults and children in both English and Spanish. Ability to work with youth in positive and developmentally appropriate ways. Ability to train, coach, evaluate and provide constructive feedback to storytime providers. Ability to maintain and build relationships with schools and community organizations. Ability to thrive in an environment with constant public contact with people from all backgrounds and age groups. Ability to demonstrate positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers, volunteers and community. Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner. Ability to be innovative, flexible and well organized. Ability to use extensive workplace and other technology including email, internet, databases, eMedia, social media and other software. Ability to pass a background check after the offer to hire has been made.

A Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study.

Two years experience providing services to children and their caregivers in a variety of settings.
Spanish language fluency.
 
Excellent customer service skills.

Other Things You Should Know:

Although the full salary range for this position is provided, starting salary is typically made at or near the range minimum.  The City and County of Denver benefit package will be offered. 

The schedule will be determined by the needs of the department and may include evening and weekend hours.
