Job Description
It is the mission of the Pikes Peak Library District to seek, engage, and transform through library services and resources that enrich individuals and build community. This position operates in a diverse environment to help fulfill the mission of the Library by performing high level cataloging tasks to maintain PPLD’s online catalog and to facilitate staff and patron access to all special collections materials. Cataloging tasks include: cataloging from copy, original MARC record cataloging, and assigning Dewey Decimal System numbers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Searches on-line databases for bibliographic records; verifies and edits the existing bibliographic data to match the item in hand
- Maintains catalog by editing, deleting, and merging bibliographic records. Applies independent judgment in reviewing records and refers problems to the Senior Cataloger
- Verifies and assigns Dewey classification numbers
- Verifies bibliographic information using an authority file
- Performs copy and original cataloging of special collections materials
- Resolves problems for special collections staff regarding bibliographic and item information
- Performs other duties as assigned
Additional Info & Requirements
- Requires a minimum of 3 years of cataloging-related experience, including at least 1 year of original cataloging. Prefer candidates with previous special collection cataloging experience.
- Requires excellent communication skills, ability to work in a team environment, a “whatever it takes” work ethic, and an excellent customer service attitude. Bilingual ability is a plus in serving our diverse community.
- Advanced knowledge of library practices, procedures, and materials.
- Basic knowledge of special collections and related cataloging, including RDA
- Ability to spell accurately, use proper grammar, and to follow complex written and verbal instructions;
- Ability to accurately edit and proofread
- Ability to document complex bibliographic and computer procedures
- Ability to operate a personal computer and to perform detailed work and data entry accurately for extended periods
- Ability to accurately type 40+ words per minute
- Ability to effectively organize work
- Possess good written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to understand structure and relationship of bibliographic records with advanced knowledge of Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) and Dewey Decimal classification
- Ability to work independently without close supervision
