Job Description

The University of Colorado Boulder Libraries invites applications from innovative and enthusiastic service-oriented professionals for the position of Head of the Gemmill Library of Engineering, Mathematics & Physics. This position leads a team of Libraries faculty and staff and is responsible for aligning branch library services and collections with the information needs of the College of Engineering and Applied Science, the departments of Physics and Mathematics, as well as a system of world-class research institutes. The Branch Head is a key member of a team of science librarians, and, with the Director of the Sciences Department, further initiates and develops departmental missions and objectives. These include embracing an increasingly electronic collection and patron-driven acquisition models, expanded instructional support for students, the reinvention of branch libraries as communal spaces embedded in their disciplines, and advocacy for change in scholarly communication. A significant part of the responsibilities of this position includes research and creative work and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado Boulder. The position reports to the Director of the Sciences Department in the University Libraries.

The Gemmill Library serves several of our campus’s most distinguished academic units, including the top-ranked Engineering school in the Rocky Mountain region and a Physics department with four Nobel laureates. The Library is committed to reinventing branch library services. A recent remodel created more collaborative spaces with appropriate technology, and efforts to create informal and intentional learning spaces are ongoing. Coupled with significantly expanded partnerships and instruction efforts, the Library has seen growing student enthusiasm with the space and its services. In order to build on this momentum, we are looking for a creative, dynamic librarian who understands the information needs of engineers and scientists as well as the ongoing evolution of library roles and services.

Responsibilities include:

  • Guide operations of branch;
  • Guide and participate in liaison activities directed toward students and faculty in engineering, mathematics, and physics, including instruction, research services, and collection development;
  • Supervise and support the development of three staff members, one faculty librarian, and over one dozen student assistants;
  • Work collaboratively within the Sciences Department and among other departments to further Libraries-wide organizational goals;
  • Actively engage in College of Engineering and Applied Science and campus-wide STEM educational and research initiatives;
  • Ensure the Libraries collections and services meet criteria set forth by Accreditation Board of Engineering & Technology (ABET) and other related accreditation standards.

Appointment and Salary:

The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time (12 month), tenure-stream faculty member. Minimum starting salary is $60,000. Depending upon professional experience and demonstrated accomplishments in scholarly activity, creative work, and service, appointment may be at the level of assistant professor or above. The salary is competitive and benefits include 22 working days vacation; 10 paid holidays; liberal sick leave; University group health care plan; group life insurance; TIAA/CREF, Fidelity, or Vanguard retirement/annuity; and support for scholarly/professional activities. Tenured faculty members are eligible for sabbatical leave.
