Job Description

This position is responsible for the selection of adult non-fiction materials in all formats.  The Selection Librarian is the subject matter expert and incorporates Patron Driven Acquisitions to meet the needs of the 21st Century Library collection. This position makes new selection decisions and identifies material for removal. This exempt, full-time position is a member of a highly collaborative team committed to achieving the mission of the Pikes Peak Library District: to seek, engage and transform lives through library services and resources that enrich individual lives and build community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Selects library materials and identifies specific collection needs based on:
    • the PPLD collection guidelines and policies,
    • reviews of materials through full-life cycle,
    • publisher/vendor information,
    • and patron/staff input or requests
  • Evaluates current library collection and collection performance using turnover rate and circulation information, interlibrary loan requests and other data; makes collection development recommendations based on data
  • Evaluates condition of materials and identifies materials that need to be removed from the collection 
  • Responsible for monitoring assigned acquisitions budgets and making recommendations for materials budget allocations based on collection development goals and material costs 
  • Creates order lists and identifies vendor sources for materials; works with vendors to solve acquisitions needs
  • Responsible for staying up-to-date on developments in the library field, develops formats and industry trends related to book publishing, media releases, and technology
  • May provide reader’s advisory service to the public
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) required.
  • Three plus years of professional experience working in a library.
  • One or more years of experience in collection development, preferably in the selection and acquisitions of adult non-fiction materials, in all formats.
  • Prefer experience with Ingram, Baker & Taylor, Midwest Tape, Recorded Books, and Overdrive.
  • Applies analytical reasoning and strategic thinking skills to support collection management functions.
  • Ability to understand bibliographic records and learn to use library control programs.
  • Possess basic mathematical skills in order to maintain accurate and complete fiscal accounting records and make related decisions.
  • Must have working knowledge of computerized acquisition programs, working knowledge of on-line ordering tools; and specialized knowledge of book/media publishers/distributors, books and media, and authors/artists.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to listen to others, and effectively interact with others.
  • Ability to effectively organize work and work independently without close supervision.
  • Demonstrates flexibility, tackles challenges and positively adapts to changes.  
  • Ability to work on a team, to have a “whatever-it-takes” work ethic, and to have an excellent customer service attitude.
  • Bilingual ability is a plus in serving our diverse community.
