Job Description

The city of Aurora's Library and Cultural Services Department is seeking a skilled Librarian Specialist who will perform professional library work in children’s and youth reference and program services, reference and information service, with focus on program development in specific regions of the library system. The Librarian Specialist will coordinate supervision and staff development functions to implement programs and provide library services to the public through the use of library resources. This position will also assist with various mid-level administrative tasks such as planning classes, workshops, collection development, and staff training.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Plans and implements interactive programs with other agencies and organizations Contacts community groups and organizations for promotion of library research resources May establish activities that promote youth development; Builds a programming resource base from the metro library system Delivers reference services to youth of all ages Supervises and trains staff in a broad range of informational skills and services Schedules training and workshops for staff Maintains budget for assigned programs Develops and reviews policies and procedures Maintains statistics and compiles monthly reports May produce annual system wide youth programs, such as Summer Reading Program Coordinates various library programs Serves on appropriate committee in community and City of Aurora agencies Recommends purchases for collection development Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge: Knowledge of the principles, organization, and practices of library service; a background in specialized children’s and youth resource materials; library classification system; a computer system and related software; Internet computerized systems and their applications to assigned functions; basic trouble­shooting in computer operation.

Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees and library users; ability to connect with groups and individuals for joint efforts benefiting youth; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing using word-processing and other applicable software; ability to train and supervise other employees.

Skills: Strong customer service skills, including those required for cultivating customer service orientation among supervised staff; strong interpersonal skills; skill in successfully dealing with children and youth.

Licenses, Certificates or Equipment Required: Valid driver’s license with good driving history. This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.

Physical Demands: Light to moderate physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 30 pounds with or without assistance; frequent lifting, carrying, walking, and standing; may require frequent pulling, pushing, bending and stooping; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens; vision to read and interpret reports and other written documents; hand/eye coordination for operation of computer keyboard, carts and moveable shelving.

Work Environment: Works in a clean, comfortable environment.

Equipment Used: Frequently uses standard office equipment including a computer system.
