Job Description

The Dean of the Kraemer Family Library is a 12-month position that serves as an officer of the University and is a tenured faculty member in the Library. The Library Dean is the chief administrator for the Kraemer Family Library, which includes the University Archives, and represents the Library within the University and at the local, state, national, and international levels. The Dean reports directly to the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and is responsible for the successful administration of the Library in accordance with University of Colorado Colorado Springs and University of Colorado System policies and procedures. The Library Dean sits on the Deans’ Council along with the other deans and plays a key role in academic planning.

The Dean leads the Library in its mission to foster the intellectual growth of UCCS students, faculty, staff, and our community by developing innovative services, technologies, collections, and spaces that facilitate their emerging information needs. The Dean also articulates a strategic vision and serves as an advocate for the Library within the University and the larger community.

The Dean of the Kraemer Family Library:

  • Provides continuing leadership and vision as the Library transforms into a knowledge commons that integrates diverse resources, seeks new opportunities, engages with the community, collaborates with University units, and sustains a vibrant research and learning community 
  • Represents the interests of the university among library consortia, in particular, the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries
  • Develops and implements the Library’s strategic plan in support of the University’s academic priorities, curricula, and research
  • Seeks development opportunities, creates fundraising priorities, and provides stewardship for donors
  • Supports a culture of collegial governance
  • Evaluates and aligns the effectiveness of Library programs to meet the needs of students and achieve institutional goals
  • Commits to quality library service centered around student learning and characterized by collaboration with faculty in support of teaching and research needs
  • Has capacity to work effectively in a multicultural setting
  • Educates the University community on issues in academic library services, collections, and spaces
  • Provides leadership for and works with others on campus on the implementation of new technologies to support teaching, learning, and research across campus and our increasingly important online programs
  • Develops strong relationships with other Deans on campus, the Provost, the Chancellor, and other University administrators
  • Functions as the chief fiscal officer for the Library and provides clear communication about the budget
  • Creates an environment that supports professional advancement
  • Engages with the campus community on a variety of dimensions

A background check will be required of any prospective employee at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. 

Minimum Qualifications:

• Masters degree from an ALA accredited program or equivalent

• A record of scholarly achievement and professional service to warrant appointment as a tenured Associate Professor or full Professor

• A record of increasing leadership responsibilities in academic libraries • Demonstrated achievements in working in a team-based environment

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

• At least five (5) years experience in academic library administration

Required Competencies/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in libraries and higher education

• Experience in effectively managing personnel, including recruitment, retention, evaluation, and professional development

• Demonstrated experience with library resource sharing, consortia, or other cooperative ventures

• Evidence of effective management of fiscal resources

• Excellent analytical, organizational, and project management skills

• Committed to quality library service centered around student learning and characterized by collaboration with faculty in support of teaching and research needs

• Capacity to work effectively in a multicultural setting

• Demonstrated ability to lead through collaborative decision making

Preferred Qualifications:

• A doctoral degree or a second Masters degree

• Participation in fundraising and grant activities

The Community

The Colorado Springs campus of the University of Colorado was established in 1965. The student population is approximately 11,000. Doctoral degrees are offered in engineering, geropsychology, educational leadership and nursing practice. The campus also has graduate programs in business, public administration, and a variety of arts and science areas. Colorado Springs, located at the foot of Pikes Peak, has a population of approximately 500,000, with tourism, high technology, manufacturing, sports and the military ranking as the key industries within the community. Located 70 miles south of Denver, Colorado Springs offers a wide variety of leisure and educational activities including sports, parks, symphony, local theater groups, museums and several institutions of higher education.
