Job Description

Position Description:  Develop strategies for and coordinates all fund-raising activities for Mesa County Public Library District

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Foundation: Serves as the Foundation Director, coordinates the efforts of the Foundation Board and its active, ongoing, and smooth functioning. Develop strategies for and coordinate all fund-raising activities of the Foundation in keeping with Library District goals. Recommends policies and establishes procedures for the Foundation in compliance with federal, state and local laws. Participates with the Foundation Board of Directors in developing and implementing a strategic plan and annual operating plan to guide the Foundation’s efforts. Develops plans to support and implement major gifts campaigns for long-term needs identified by the Library. Attends all Foundation Board of Director meetings and presents reports as appropriate. Develops and implements a detailed plan to attract, build and maintain effective and mutually beneficial relationships with individuals and corporations capable of contributing to the Library Foundation. Works with Foundation leadership to identify and attract Board members who can help carry out fundraising goals. Actively develops and maintains Board member relationships. Convenes Board committees as needed. Develops and implements plans for communicating the goals and activities of the Foundation and funding needs of the Library, including direct campaigns. Provides appropriate education programs to strengthen and expand Board members’ fundraising skills and contacts. Assesses the effectiveness of the various fundraising programs and makes appropriate recommendations to enhance Library financial resources and development functions. Actively supports the mission of MCPLD.

Fundraising / Grant Writing: Responsible for planning, developing, and maintaining a comprehensive fund-raising program on behalf of the Library District. Identify, define and acquire funding resources available to MCPLD. Work collaboratively with staff members to identify avenues of economic support for library programs and services. Aggressively seeks new corporate, foundation and individual funding sources and maintains relationships with current/past donors. Represents MCPLD in meetings with potential funding sources. Plans and coordinates programs and events that support fundraising efforts. Performs research to find grant funding opportunities, writes grant proposals and handles grant writing and reporting activities. Generates financial, analytical, and statistical reports from the database as well as reports on fundraising.

Fiscal and Budget Oversight: Ensure that all financial and banking activities are handled accurately, timely, and according to established rules, regulations and policies. Works closely with the Finance Director and Foundation Board Treasurer to oversee fiscal and budgetary activities of the Foundation. Assists Library Director and Foundation Board in determining fiscal requirements for development activities. Prepares budgetary recommendations and monitors budget. Maintains donor records. Maintains records of purchases and expenditures against donations. Prepares financial reports related to donation activity. Oversees record management and expenditure reports. Analyzes financial statements for accuracy and evidence of emerging problems. Serves as Library Foundation’s contact with vendors and contractors. Maintains donor and financial records related to the Foundation. Prepares and presents financial and strategic reports for the MCPLD Board of Trustees and Foundation Board of Directors. Coordinates and tracks grants and grant reporting for the Foundation and Library.

Administrative Team - Communicates regularly and consistently with Library Director and administrative team to discuss library issues, concerns, opportunities and threats.Attends and contributes to manager meetings and other planning sessions. Attends monthly Library Board meetings and makes reports when appropriate. Handles problems, concerns and emergencies in a professional manner and according to library policies and procedures.

Management Team: Participates in the Library District’s management team. Works with other managers to develop needed policies and procedures for the library, and interpret these for staff and patrons. Serves as an example for all staff in providing library service and communicating expectations. Stays current on library issues and trends. Actively participates and contributes to various library committees and activities. Works with community organizations to enhance and promote library services. Takes on other projects and tasks at the direction of the Library Director.

Friends of the Library:  Serves as a liaison between the Friends of the Library and the Library.  Works with representatives from the Friends to coordinate efforts that will benefit the Library and actively support the mission of MCPLD.

Maintains self-development and keeps up-to-date on Library affairs: Attends monthly staff meetings and training, attends external trainings as requested, stays aware of changes via staff wiki.

Performs other duties as assigned or requested: Performs additional duties as opportunities arise that assist the department and the Library in achieving specified goals and objectives.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Subject to venues at many internal and external events that include varying climate conditions.  Some venues require standing, speaking and interacting with community members outside of normal business hours.

Subject to many interruptions.  When working in the office area, sustained posture in a seated position, utilizing office equipment (such as computer, keyboard, copier, facsimile, telephone and other general office equipment) for prolonged periods of time. 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree in business management, marketing, public relations, or related field;

Five to Six years’ of progressively responsible and successful fundraising and development experience, with increasing levels of responsibility in leadership; demonstrated success with major fundraising campaigns; knowledge of board governance, and skill in cultivating board engagement;
