Job Description

It is the mission of the Pikes Peak Library District: to seek, engage and transform lives through library services and resources that enrich individual lives and build community. This position operates in a diverse environment to help fulfill the mission of the Library by providing cataloging and metadata creation for Special Collections materials.  This position catalogs books, maps, pamphlets, manuscripts, photographs, oral histories and other Special Collection materials in order to make them widely available to the public. This position also provides reference services for regional history and genealogy materials.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides excellent customer service and maintains a courteous, positive image of the library when interacting with patrons and staff.
  • Maintains patron and staff confidentiality.
  • Searches on-line databases (such as OCLC) for bibliographic records; verifies and edits the existing bibliographic data to match the item in hand.
  • Creates original MARC records for library materials when records are unavailable in the vendor database.
  • Maintains online catalog by editing, deleting, and merging bibliographic records; applies independent judgment in reviewing records and refers problems to the Special Collection Division Head as necessary.
  • Creates simple bibliographic records for items that are being ordered.
  • Verifies and assigns Dewey classification numbers and Cutter-Sanborn numbers.
  • Creates item records and processes items for Special Collections.
  • Creates metadata for online digital collections and indexes local resources.
  • Verifies bibliographic information using authority files.
  • Works on the public service desks providing reference service to library users in person, over the phone, via email, and through other forms of communication.
  • Assists and instructs patrons with material and on-line searches, computer software applications, reference/in-depth research, community referrals, and outside sources/collections.
  • Provides in-depth assistance and information about the library’s services and procedures.
  • Searches a variety of reference resources.
  • Promotes library services through tours, demonstrations, talks and displays.
  • Participates in Special Collection planning.
  • Assesses patron needs and provides pertinent materials in an organized fashion (including bibliographies, fact sheets, pathfinders, etc.).
  • Directs, in coordination with the Manager, the work of other staff members, volunteers, and interns.
  • May organize and conduct projects related to departmental goals and needs.
  • May serve as the “person in charge”” in the absence of a manager or supervisor.
  • Tests and documents cataloging software errors and assists with documenting cataloging procedures for Special Collections.
  • May provide support and direction for Special Collection Specialists.
  • May teach computer classes for the public and PPLD staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Additional Info & Requirements

  • Three plus years of professional cataloging experience in a library setting, including at least one year of original cataloging.
  • Experience cataloging special collections materials preferred.
  • Experience working in a public or academic library providing reference for regional history and genealogy collections preferred. 
  • Familiarity with official library cataloging rules and basic cataloging reference tools.
  • Thorough understanding of MARC standards for cataloging and Cutter-Sanborn tables.
  • Familiarity with RDA and current trends in bibliographic description and with the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative.
  • Ability to effectively organize work and work independently without close supervision.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and office equipment, including Microsoft Office software applications; ability to accurately type at least 45 words per minute.
  • Ability to work on a team, have a “whatever-it-takes” work ethic, and have an excellent customer service attitude.
  • Bilingual ability is a plus in serving our diverse community.
