Job Description

It is the mission of the Pikes Peak Library District to seek, engage, and transform lives through library services and resources that enrich individual lives and build community.  This position operates in a diverse environment to help fulfill the library’s mission by promoting community, conducting research, providing general information and assistance to all ages, focusing on children’s reference and information services, programming, and outreach while encouraging children’s use of the library. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Provides excellent customer service and maintains a courteous, positive image of the library when interacting with patrons and staff; works on public service desks providing information, reference, reader’s advisory services and materials processing; explains circulation policies and procedures to patrons; answers questions regarding library records; and maintains patron and staff confidentiality

2.  Creates, promotes, and presents children’s general programming based on developmental needs and the inclusion of early literacy practices 

3. Engages and interacts with the community through tours, publicity, displays and merchandising; and collaborates with schools or community groups and provides outreach to communicate library services and program

4.Maintains children’s collection (including labeling, weeding, and rotation of materials); promotes an appealing atmosphere in the children’s area through materials and displays; may recommend the purchase of children’s materials; and may maintain specialized files, databases, or collections related to Children’s resources and materials.

5. Acts as “person-in-charge” (PIC) of the facility in the absence of a supervisor or manager; opens and closes library as scheduled; assumes responsibility for safe and effective operation of the facility or department (including the initiation of emergency procedures as needed); and ensures that serious Incident Reports and Insurance Reports are completed properly and submitted in a timely manner

6. Works in a collaborative team/community environment to create, produce, and promote library programs and initiatives

7. Keeps informed of library and departmental information and changes via electronic and written communication and attendance at staff and district meetings

8. Performs other related duties as assigned

Additional Info & Requirements

Experience – Requires a minimum of 1 year of library or related experience working with children;  Prefer candidates with experience working with children in a library setting and who can accurately type at least 45 words per minute

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

Knowledge of basic library functions

Knowledge of children’s developmental stages, interests, community needs, and children’s literature

Ability to provide general assistance and information about the library’s services and procedures; may assist patrons in using or obtaining a library card; may oversee circulation functions

Ability to promote library resources and programs for children; ability to prepare attractive and inviting Children’s displays

Ability to follow verbal/written instructions

Possesses good verbal and written communication skills; ability to adjust communication methods when interacting with children

Ability to instruct patrons in library resources

Ability to represent the Library District with tact and courtesy

Ability to exhibit sound professional judgment and demeanor in all public interactions

Ability to think and act appropriately under pressure while serving on the public desk

Ability to use a personal computer and office equipment effectively

Ability to work independently, and as an effective team member, have a "whatever-it-takes" work ethic, and have an excellent customer service attitude
