Job Description

Are you dedicated to meeting the literacy needs of young children and their families?  Passionate about going the extra mile to deliver the best customer service? Creative and energetic in developing programs and a library collection for youth?  The Louisville Public Library seeks a highly motivated and energetic individual to join our excellent Children's Services Division as we help young children become readers.

Under the general direction of the Public Services Manager and in partnership with the Children's Librarians, you will provide timely information services; excellent reader's advisory and library instruction; innovative and creative programming; assist with collection maintenance and perform limited circulation duties for children and their families inside the library as well as in schools and in the community.  Performs other work as required.  Schedule includes evenings and rotating weekend hours.

This is a part-time non-benefited position budgeted for 25 hours per week.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Prepare and perform story times on an as-needed basis.
• Under the direction of the Children’s Librarians perform collection maintenance duties.
• Under the direction of the Children’s Librarians perform outreach to local schools, preschools and day care centers.
• Assist with organization, coordination, and presentation of events, programs, and instruction to children and their families on an as-needed basis, including STEM and maker programs, basic computer coding workshops, book clubs, after-school events, pre-school story times, and early literacy training.
• Provide instructional assistance in the use of library-supported technologies and resources, including basic instruction in using new and emerging devices and digital resources.  Assist children and their families to locate the information and resources that meet their needs.
• Promote library services and programs for children in area schools and community organizations.
• Create visual displays for the Children's Services Division.
• Assume responsibility for department when working alone.
• Assist with development of grant proposals.

Additional Info & Requirements

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

Required: Bachelor's degree in a related field such as education, early childhood education or STEM related field.

Preferred: Experience in working in a public library. Any experience with STEM programs and applications is a huge plus!
