Job Description

General Description

In alignment with the strategic plan and the Museum’s mission, vision, and values, the Collections Manager will maintain the Colorado Railroad Museum’s library, archival material, and objects collections.

Collections Management Duties

  • Supervise the accessioning, cataloging, indexing, and storing of all museum collections
  • Oversee the inventory system for the museum’s objects collection
  • Recommend and supervise necessary preservation and conservation efforts for all museum collections
  • Ensure museum collection management program meets or is working to meet professional curatorial standards
  • Maintain statistics and prepares annual reports on processing, preservation and conservation, and use of museum exhibits and collections, physical inventories, and condition assessment
  • Implement and maintain collections management training for volunteer staff; to include stewardship awareness and basic collection management procedures such as accessioning, cataloging, and preserving collections
  • Collaborate with professional exhibits staff and/or contractors to develop museum exhibits utilizing items from the museum objects collection
  • Develop yearly work plans, written reports, and forms related to museum’s objects collection
  • Develop yearly budget for museum collections program

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and PastPerfect
  • Team player with a sense of humor, who is creative, flexible, energetic, and enjoys training, coaching, and directing a large volunteer corps.
  • Must be willing to work flexible schedule (Tues – Sat. 9AM-5PM)
  • Knowledge of library/collections procedures, applicable rules and regulations, cataloging principles, research and reference experience.
  • Highly organized, ability to juggle multiple projects, multiple volunteers, and multiple deadlines.
  • preferred (though not required) strong background in railroad history or knowledge of railroading
