Job Description

Title:   Librarian                                                       Reports to: Executive Director

Summary: The librarian is responsible for the day to day activities of the library. The librarian provides reference and research services and also oversees library circulation. Other duties of this position include acquiring new materials, enforcing library polices and cataloging and processing materials. Also included are inventorying and fixing cataloging errors associated with the library catalog. The librarian also maintains a commitment to librarianship and strives to meet the standards of the profession. Normal work hours are Tuesday through Saturday. This position is exempt.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for development of the library collections including acquisition, maintenance and preservation of materials
  • Insure accessibility of library resources by cataloging and organizing all materials
  • Provide numismatic information and research to members, non-members and staff in a timely manner
  • Promote the library as an important asset of the Association, promote donation of materials
  • Supervision of library staff
  • Answering reference and research questions as needed
  • Receive all materials requests and locate the best information for each request
  • Supervise circulation
  • Maintain correct records of library materials
  • Process and pursue overdue library materials and outstanding patrons as necessary
  • Determine acceptance and inclusion of donated library materials
  • Prepare and catalog new and donated materials for inclusion into the library holdings
  • Repairing materials
  • Creating and implementing new library policies and protocol as needed
  • Maintain current knowledge of library standards and changes within the profession
  • Keep current with new materials of interest to patrons
  • Other issues as they arise (i.e. issues with library catalog)
  • Attend and participate in meetings and committees as appropriate
  • Some travel may be required
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program, previous library management experience preferred or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of various library functions (ex. reference, cataloging, collection development, digital information systems)
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong organizational, planning and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
