Job Description

Role: Answers patron requests for information and assistance, coordinates community programming/outreach/advocacy events, and acts as a staff resource.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

25% - PROGRAMMING & OUTREACH – Assists in identifying informative and entertaining programs and outreach events; plans with outside agencies in partnerships that promote use of library services; delivers programs to audiences within the library, at organizations within the branch’s service area, and via the website to virtual patrons by identifying and accessing audiences, and assisting the Public Information Office with recruiting in order to promote use of library resources and represent the library district to the community. E

20% - TECHNOLOGY INSTRUCTION – Applies digital technology skills by answering questions in order to assist patrons in using library technology; fosters a nonjudgmental, supportive environment for a diverse population of technology users by using patience and effective communication to assure they receive a positive learning experience; identifies opportunities to offer formal training in the library and advises patrons on availability of classroom and individual technology instruction. accommodates different learning styles, assesses the needs of the learner and collaborates with the learner to promote active learning in one-on-one situations to meet the learner’s needs. 15% - INFORMATION NAVIGATION – Provides in-depth reference services and locates requested materials and information sources in order to satisfy patron requests for library materials and information. E

15% - COLLECTION MAINTENANCE – Maintains and creates web content, recommends additions to the collection, weeds and discards items in collection by assessing the condition and suitability of items, notifying the Collection Librarian of the discarded item in order to keep collection appealing, current and useful. E

10% - PATRON ASSISTANCE – Assists patrons in the use of library materials and technology by guiding them in searching the catalog and stacks, accessing databases, and navigating the Internet in order to locate resources in the collection and online. Develops strategies and sources to stay well-informed as a readers advisor. E

10% - STAFF RESOURCE – Acts as a resource for staff by providing in-depth reference assistance, reference consultation, mentoring and training of staff in providing reference and reader’s advisory services in order to provide dynamic services to patrons. E

5% - OTHER DUTIES – creates displays, bibliographies, and blogs; recommends budgets, requests equipment and supply purchases, prepares statistical reports, acts as Person In Charge (PIC), and assists Supervisor with projects in order to ensure the smooth operation of the department. N

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Masters Degree in Library Science required

Experience:

Two to Five years of experience working in a library (preferred)

Skilled in working with a population of diverse demographic backgrounds and cultures

Skill in basic computer operation

Able to read, write, and speak Spanish fluently (preferred)

Physical Success Factors:

Able to push a fully loaded book-cart weighing up to 200 lbs.

Able to lift 50 lbs.
