Job Description

OVERALL JOB OBJECTIVE:

Under general supervision, to provide library patrons with a high level of customer service and assistance in fulfilling information and youth programming needs, and to work with electronic access to the Internet, library catalog, and online databases using established procedures, and to perform related duties as required. The Youth Services Specialist is charged with modeling quality customer service behaviors which align with the Library customer service model and City Values. The specialist will be attentive, adaptable, and patron-facing.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Creates a pleasant, customer friendly atmosphere for patrons at the library through:
  1. Positive interactions with patrons, maintaining fair and equitable application of library policies and procedures.
  2. Responding to and resolving customer issues that may include library policy interpretation and library space use
  3. Keeping informed of patron needs and requests regarding library collections and services
  4. Communicating professionally with all age-level persons, either in person, on the telephone, or via email to conduct library business as necessary.
  1. Maintains an understanding of the needs of youth from several perspectives including cognitive development, emotional and social development, and educational development.

Instructs patrons in library procedures and use of library materials, including the library catalog, databases and downloadable materials (eBooks, streaming audio and video, etc.) while maintaining a general knowledge of resources available in the Children’s, Teens’, and the larger library collection.

Under the direction of the Youth Services Manager, plans, schedules, promotes and administers a variety of programs for children, including: contacting, interviewing and coordinating necessary volunteers, performers and employees; designing and producing necessary materials; purchasing and organizing supplies; scheduling the meeting space; and assisting other Library staff with graphics and the promotion of activities. Provides back-up for programs by preparing the space, introducing performers or leading the program. Coordinates with local schools to provide school tours and visits to local schools to promote library programs and services. Assists with the implementation and administration of the annual Summer Reading Program.

  7. Creates and provides simple early literacy activities for children and their caregivers.

  9. Assists with collection maintenance such as weeding, making purchasing suggestions and day-to-day upkeep.

  11. Compiles for patrons reading lists of recommended materials on issues relating to children and types of books that are frequently requested.

  13. Creates displays of topical interest, including specialized collections of books and materials to encourage reading and provide information in those areas.

  15. Performs clerical duties including: maintenance of paper and electronic files; processes materials, information, accounts or records using established Library procedures.

  17. Operates a computer using appropriate software for duties assigned.

  19. Interacts with the public and Library staff to exchange routine information and acts as a resource for other staff in their interactions with youth.

  21. Works with material handlers, volunteers, substitutes and work-study students, and provides them with on-the-job training as needed.

  23. Operates equipment including photocopier and scanner, computer and barcode printers, RFID, self-check machines, and audio/visual equipment.

  • Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the city.
  • Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
  • Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.

Additional Info & Requirements

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years previous library experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Excellent interpersonal skills. Good organizational skills. Well-developed keyboard skills. Familiarity with personal computers and appropriate software. Experience with data entry or electronic systems. Experience working with children and teens in a group setting including programming experience. Experience and ability to work effectively and respectfully with people from a variety of backgrounds, ages and abilities. Ability to work under minimal supervision. Interest, desire and ability to communicate courteously and effectively with and provide services to others, including the public, both in person, by telephone and via email.

  • Knowledge of and efficient use of a variety of library resources to provide excellent customer service to youth, families, teens and caregivers.
  • Knowledge of children’s and teen literature. Knowledge of the application of Every Child Ready to Read 2 and early literacy practices to library programming and services.
  • Knowledge and respect for developmental needs of children from birth through adolescence.
  •  
  • Willingness and ability to take an active role in library programming.
  • Willingness to take direction and learn a variety of tasks.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work a schedule that includes evenings and weekends. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS – In addition to the required minimum qualifications:
  • Spanish language fluency strongly preferred. Extensive customer service experience.  Experience working in a team environment and ability to work independently. Experience with scheduling, coordinating, contracting and promoting varied programs, preferably in a library setting. Experience with Innovative Interfaces, Inc. automated library system.   Ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects over extended periods of time. Knowledge of library collection development and automated library circulation systems.
