Job Description

Join the Boulder Public Library team as a Youth Services Specialist in our newly renovated Main Library in beautiful downtown Boulder.  Our Youth Specialists report to the Youth Services Manager and are the primary service contact for children, teens and caregivers.  We are looking for two (2) part-time people who are passionate about libraries and want to make a difference in the Boulder community through creative, fun story times, innovative programs, and outreach opportunities.  Additional duties include working in our Teen Space and in collaboration with adult services to provide seamless service to our patrons. Spanish language skills are a plus in serving our diverse community. 

Under general supervision, these positions will provide library patrons with a high level of customer service and assistance in fulfilling information and youth programming needs, and to work with electronic access to the Internet, library catalog, and online databases using established procedures, and to perform related duties as required.  The Youth Services Specialist is charged with modeling quality customer service behaviors which align with the Library customer service model and City Values.  The specialist will be attentive, adaptable, and patron-facing.

Additional Info & Requirements

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years previous library experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.  Excellent interpersonal skills. Good organizational skills.  Well-developed keyboard skills.  Familiarity with personal computers and appropriate software.  Experience with data entry or electronic systems.  Experience working with children and teens in a group setting including programming experience. Experience and ability to work effectively and respectfully with people from a variety of backgrounds, ages and abilities. Ability to work under minimal supervision.  Interest, desire and ability to communicate courteously and effectively with and provide services to others, including the public, both in person, by telephone and via email. 

  • Knowledge of and efficient use of a variety of library resources to provide excellent customer service to youth, families, teens and caregivers.
  • Knowledge of children’s and teen literature. Knowledge of the application of Every Child Ready to Read 2 and early literacy practices to library programming and services.  
  • Knowledge and respect for developmental needs of children from birth through adolescence. 
  • Willingness and ability to take an active role in library programming. 
  • Willingness to take direction and learn a variety of tasks. 
  • Willingness and flexibility to work a schedule that includes evenings and weekends. 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS – In addition to the required minimum qualifications:  Spanish language fluency strongly preferred.  Extensive customer service experience. Experience working in a team environment and ability to work independently.  Experience with scheduling, coordinating, contracting and promoting varied programs, preferably in a library setting.  Experience with Innovative Interfaces, Inc. automated library system.   Ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects over extended periods of time. Knowledge of library collection development and automated library circulation systems.
