Circulation Supervisor
Job Title: LA II – Circulation Supervisor (Full Time) Department: Circulation
Immediate Supervisor: Head of Public Services Non-Exempt
Basic Function: The Circulation Supervisor is responsible for overseeing areas related to the smooth operation of the circulation desk. Supervises, trains and evaluates circulation staff.
Physical Requirements: Hearing and vision corrected to normal ranges. Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, and push a loaded book truck weighing 120 pounds. Ability to reach up to seven feet to retrieve and replace books with a stool or ladder, as needed.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree preferred. An AA degree or equivalent of two years of college level courses required. Requires a minimum of two years of previous public service experience.. Ability to learn to operate equipment as required by the position; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and library patrons. Familiarity with personal computers and appropriate software required. Requires a valid Colorado driver’s license.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides efficient, courteous public service and presents a positive image of the library in attitude, appearance and performance of duties.
- Plan and maintain displays to generate interest in library items.
- Trains new library staff in proper circulation desk protocol and shelving procedures.
- Assists in interviewing and selecting all regular and substitute circulation staff.
- Supervises the resolution of problem materials-materials returned with missing or incorrect pieces, determines charges for damaged items.
- Coordinates all “claims returned”.
- Negotiates issues involving overdue and lost library materials with patrons. Processes in-house hold books.
- Collects daily cash when Head of Public Services is off.
- Keeps abreast of trends and technology in circulation services. Provides advice for improvements to circulation policies and procedures.
- Attends training sessions and other meetings that relate to and will enhance the customer service areas of the library.
- Sorts and shelves library materials; maintains new book shelf, magazines and stack management. Maintains order of the collection to facilitate public access to resources.
- Assumes full responsibility for all circulation services. These activities include but are not limited to: maintaining registration files, checking materials in and out, filling reserve requests, collecting fines and fees.
- Plans and facilitates monthly bookclub.
- Processes overdue and hold notices to be mailed. Includes maintaining changes to patron records to insure proper delivery of notices.
- Sets up circulation desk, checks printers and copier for paper, and keeps community and library literature displays full.
- Assists patrons in finding materials and information. Answers patron queries in person and on the phone, including placing requests and renewal of materials.
- Gives basic assistance on computers.
- Oversees and inputs borrower registration information, screening for accuracy and completeness.
- Insures that circulation procedures maintain patrons’ confidentiality.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to keep confidential records and perform routine tasks; learn library methods, techniques and computerized databases; work in a team environment; use good judgment. Ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately; pay attention to detail. Ability to work nights and weekends, as needed.
