Job Description

The Digital Collections Coordinator is a newly created, full time position within the Colorado State Library.  The position is open to experienced information professionals with strong project management and facilitation skills.  Candidates should be interested in exploring and supporting expanded access to digital collections from Colorado libraries, archives, government agencies and cultural heritage organizations.

The ideal candidate should possess the following skills:

  • Proven proficiency in project management, communication and outreach activities, event planning and grant writing.
  • Expertise working in a library, archive, cultural heritage organization, or affiliated educational, non-profit, or professional organization.
  • Experience coordinating the activities of small teams towards identified goals.
  • Experience with digital projects and knowledge of trends and best practices in the field of information management.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and building effective relationships within those communities.
  • Knowledge of current technologies and metadata standards and practices in libraries and archives.
  • Presentation and training skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and develop feasible, realistic solutions to problems and conundrums.

The position will be responsible for maintaining and growing Colorado’s collective digital presence through cooperative digitization and preservation initiatives.  This would include but not be limited to coordinating and collaborating with digitization partners and vendors  for the creation of digital content; liaising with key stakeholders within the library, archive and cultural heritage communities to develop and foster partnerships; providing training and consulting to institutions and organizations to help them gain awareness  of issues related to digital collections, copyright,  preservation and metadata standards.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • MLS from an American Library Association Accredited program or equivalent advanced degree.
  • Minimum of two years professional experience with digital initiatives or digital collections in libraries, archives, or museums
  • Experience with digital content management systems
  • Strong background in customer service
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team\Proven experience with project management and juggling multiple demands
  • Ability to prioritize independently and identify when to seek input in setting priorities
  • Ability and willingness to travel
  • Ability to pass a background check, which includes a motor vehicle records search

Strongly Preferred:

  • Knowledge of multiple non-MARC metadata standards including Dublin Core, EAD, MODS, METS, LOM and VRA.  Basic understanding of cataloging standards for bibliographic and authority formats.
  • Experience working with an institutional repository, digital CMS, or similar platform (e.g. DSpace, Fedora, CONTENTdm etc.)
  • Familiarity with data interchange standards (e.g. OAI-PMH)
  • Familiarity with Linked Data and semantic web
  • Knowledge of current issues and trends in intellectual property, copyright, and fair use
  • Experience with quality assurance and quality control in the digital environment
  • Experience creating, reviewing editing and bulk loading of metadata or content for digital collections.
  • Knowledge of current digital reformatting and digital conversion policies and trends, including issues related to application of metadata to digital objects.

This position is funded by the Colorado State Library, but is administered through a cooperative arrangement with the Colorado Library Consortium (CLiC).  All activities and responsibilities undertaken within this role are for the advancement of Colorado State Library initiatives and programs.
