Summary
The Circulation Manager at Schewe Library ensures that all the operations related to the circulation of materials in the Schewe Library are functioning effectively, including those associated with the
I-Share Reciprocal Borrowing program and the periodical collection, as well as materials placed on reserve for courses. This person ensures that the Library is open and ready for use at all posted opening times, that problems with the facilities or staff availability are noticed and acted upon, that the student staff is trained and present, and that the Illinois College community feels welcomed into the Library space. The person should be even-tempered, capable of multi-tasking and dealing with problems, detail-oriented, and generally of a positive disposition.
Essential Functions

Collection Maintenance
- Supervises circulation of library materials, maintenance of library's collection, and functioning of automated circulation system
- Manages I-Share Reciprocal Borrowing program and Reserves
- Trains and Supervises student staff in coordinating shelf reading, pickup, re-shelving of books and searching for missing materials
Management
- Interviews, hires, trains, assigns, and evaluates student staff; resolves student staff problems
- Projects student staffing needs, prepares budget projections and monitors expenditures
- Develops, interprets and applies policies and procedures, and recommends changes
- Supervises maintenance of accounts related to billing and collection of fines
Reader Service
- Provides welcoming atmosphere for library visitors; ensures good customer service in student staff
- Responds to inquiries regarding library service, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
Primary Job Functions
- Oversees all circulation functions
- Supervises, hires, trains, and schedules student workers so that circulation desk is staffed whenever the library is open
- Establishes strong customer service and welcoming atmosphere
- Processes I-Share materials daily, prepares outgoing materials for courier pick-up, and readies incoming materials for check-out
- Keeps track of receipt of periodicals and newspapers, claims any missed issues
- Maintains electronic and paper reserves for patron use, with faculty collaboration
- Verifies, prepares, and submits student workers time cards for payment
- Compiles, prepares, maintains essential reports, records, and statistics
- Opens library
- Makes sure most current copies of periodicals are displayed for patron use
- Troubleshoots basic problems encountered by patrons and operate office equipment
Secondary Job Functions
- Provides basic reference service; directs library users to appropriate staff member
- Shifts books as needed to create more space in stacks
- Re-orders paper for copiers and printers as needed
- Informs campus of library hours, closures for break, etc.
- Produces signage for library
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree, required
- One or more years’ professional library experience, desired; without library experience, evidence of strong customer service and organizational skills
- Must be flexible and willing to work odd hours during opening week and finals
- Excellent interpersonal skills and positive attitude about working with other people.
- Must demonstrate intercultural competence, working well with people from all backgrounds
- Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing.
- Familiarity with basic computer operations, and ability to learn and use an integrated library system.
- Ability to think independently and show initiative to quickly resolve problems.
- Highly organized team player.
- Must be conscientious, dependable, even-tempered, congenial and able to work cooperatively.
