Job Summary and Description

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Borrowing Services with the University Libraries at the University of Colorado Boulder is hiring for a professional manager to plan and implement strategic direction for the unit, and to contribute to the vision and mission of the larger Scholarly Resource Development Department. We are looking for an educated individual with previous supervisory experience, significant academic library experience, at least four years of experience in interlibrary loan, and has experience working with OCLC ILL, ILLiad, and other ILL applications. What your key responsibilities will be:
ILL Borrowing locates, borrows, purchases, and acquires resources that the Libraries does not hold in its collection. This is an essential library service since the Libraries cannot own everything that faculty and students may need for their studies. Annually, ILL Borrowing receives 15-20,000 requests for such materials, often for unique or foreign materials or primary source documents. An additional 5,000 requests are filled by the unit from the Libraries online resources when users are unable to find these articles on their own. As a unit of the Scholarly Resource Development Department, ILL Borrowing works closely with Acquisitions, Collection Development and subject specialists to obtain requested materials.

The Head of Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Borrowing Services provides leadership, vision, and strategic directions for ILL Borrowing Services. This position also works in close collaboration with the Circulation department and the Materials Management unit, where ILL Lending resides, to facilitate shared projects and ILL applications.

Responsibilities of this position include:
• This position is an authority on Interlibrary Loan/Resource Sharing and, as such, serves as a resource to the Libraries, faculty, and students and is a key liaison with appropriate personnel at partner libraries, consortia, and library cooperatives, such as the Center for Research Libraries.
• Assigns job duties and responsibilities for 2.75 FTE staff and 1 FTE student assistants; manages the unit’s workflows, protocols, policies, and procedures; and oversees the implementation and development of ILL Borrowing tools, technologies, and systems in support of university and Libraries mission and goals.
• Interprets and applies copyright guidelines, licensing terms, consortia agreements and national interlibrary loan practices and standards.
• Investigates resource sharing programs and projects, both national and international, and implements appropriate agreements and workflow.
• Collaborates with Collection Development, Acquisitions, and subject specialists to identify gaps in the collection and emerging areas of research for collection building.
• Manages the unit’s budgetary needs. Coordinates ILL purchase on demand, workflow, and decision making with the Acquisitions Unit and ensures that university fiscal rules are followed.
• Designs and develops methods for analyzing ILL Borrowing and copyright data to support informed decision making. Provides assessments and reports on ILL activity to various constituencies on a timely basis.
• Stays current with trends in resource sharing and copyright, Open Access/scholarly communication issues, e-resources, and acquisitions models.

What we can offer:
The anticipated salary range for this position is $48,000-$55,000, and is commensurate with skills and experience.

Minimum Qualifications

What we require:
• Bachelor’s degree
• Previous successful supervisory experience
• Significant academic library experience
• Four years of experience in interlibrary loan.
• Previous experience working with OCLC and OCLC ILL system, ILLiad and other ILL applications.

Desired Qualifications

What we’d like you to have:
• Previous experience in interlibrary loan borrowing in an academic or research institution.
• Experience working with ILL partners and with consortia.
• Strong conceptual and analytical skills.
• Advanced knowledge of bibliographic searching, electronic delivery systems, and an understanding of software applications for library functions.
• Master’s degree in Library and Information Science.
• Experience in acquisitions or collection development.
• Demonstrated knowledge of copyright and licensing issues.

Preferred qualifications may be used to further reduce the pool of applicants to those who are most highly qualified.
